"And that's all you need?" I ask as Spring finishes filling up a vial of my blood.
He nods, tail flicking in excitement at what he holds in my hands. They'd already taken bone marrow samples three days ago, and since then I've been waiting, waiting to hear anything new.
I've been here for three days, three days of not talking to anyone except Spring who drops in to see how I'm doing. I'd had a seizure during that time but had almost ripped out Demon's eyes when he'd come to try and offer me comfort. I still didn't feel like seeing him, and there was nothing he could do anyway. I needed Phoenix, but he was far away and out of reach. I haven't spoken to him yet, something to do with making sure we're secure before they risk making contact. I have a feeling they just don't want us communicating, are trying every tactic they know to draw out the length of time before they let us talk.
It's starting to make me nervous, if we're all on the same side, what's with the secrecy?
Spring slides the vial of my blood into a case as if he's carrying the cure every known disease, "Oh yes, we've managed to copy the data Aradonious had on you. Our scientists have been working off the information to create what we need. All we needed was the actual product to manipulate into our serum."
Serum? My face is blank from years of training but my markings give me away as they turn yellow. "I thought you said there would be no more experiments."
Spring shakes his heads markings lighting up in alarm, "Oh no, don't worry. We promised not to hurt you and we mean it."
"Then what is the serum for?" I motion to the vile, "It's my blood, my bone marrow, don't you think I have a right to know what it's being used for?"
The door behind Spring slides open and Winter steps through, eyes hard as he watches us. He doesn't seem like the kind of person who would ever agree to work with Marked people. So how did he end up working with New Horizons? How did he end up being the spokesperson for humans? Now he just raises an eyebrow in question, "You get it?"
Spring nods, "Yes, all done here."
Winter holds outa small case, identical to the one Spring had just filed my blood away into, "Good because we've got your cure all ready."
I hold his gaze but inside I'm cowering. My markings betray me, turning almost neon green, "And you know it will work? Have you tested it?"
"What do you think the bone marrow was for? We tested it in lab and saw good results. The fraying DNA healed itself, in record time too apparently."
I'm still wary, "So, how was the cure made? What did you do that Aradonious and his lab couldn't?"
"Oh they were close,"Spring jumps in, always eager to discuss his work, "But they just needed a bit more time. We got a head start because we had access to their knowledge. They were looking for a way to forcibly mesh the differing DNA together, we looked for a way to create bridges instead."
"What do you mean? That sounds the same to me."
Spring is too excited by the development to roll his eyes are my lack of understanding, "They wanted to just fuse the DNA. But that's not quite right. It's like welding metal together, it can't bend afterwards. Instead it's in a fixed position. But your DNA is changing, constantly warping due to the influx in different species coming together. So the bonds we wanted to create that would connect the DNA together and stop it from breaking down also have to be flexible."
"So if you've cured me, then your plan to go along with turning others into hybrids is a go I take it?" My voice is flat, I'm still not sure if it's a good idea, or if it's even possible.
