Fray
"How long have you two been married?" Mum asked cheerily, creating small talk.
"It's coming up to three years now," Hiccup answer, wrapping an arm around Astrid as she smiled warmly.
The two obviously cared a lot about each other, the way they talked and looked at each other is very sweet. It makes me sick.
"No little ones yet?" Dad asked, trying to continue the conversation.
This put both Hiccup and Astrid off, they exchanged a glance, and Astrid stared down at her lap.
"No, not yet." Hiccup asked, acting like it was no big deal, but I knew the vibe that it was a big deal to them.
"Enjoy it while it lasts, they're a handful," mum teases, glancing at me. We all laughed, but Hiccup and Astrid were very awkward about it.
"But, they're really worth it, watching them grow up and teaching them to be independent adults is the most rewarding thing you'll ever do as a couple- you should be looking forward to it!" Dad tells them, acting friendly and smiling at me.
Something was definitely up with Hiccup and Astrid, they seemed very awkward about this while kid thing, maybe they don't want kids but they're just making polite conversation. Or it's something deeper...
"How many do you want?" I asked, leaning in. "I've always wanted a boy and a girl, the girl two years older. I'd name them Hanna and Thor." I glanced at them, studying their reactions.
"Uh... well, we don't have any preferences on genders or numbers..." Astrid replied awkwardly.
"As long as it's a manageable number, we'll be fine." Hiccup jumped in.
"Yes, but what about names?" I asked.
"Uh, Stoick after my late father and Sara for a girl." Hiccup replied easily, they'd obviously thought a lot more about this topic.
"Or Isabel, Tom, Lila, Sebastian. We've thought of a lot of names." Astrid answered.
"Wow that's a lot... it's almost as if you're expecting a baby... oh my Thor are you pregnant?" I faked excitement.
"No, she's not...." Hiccup starts, staring at Astrid as if permission to proceed.
Astrid sighed, "Fine, I've had two miscarriages before and we thought of a lot of names then." She mumbled, embarrassed.
"Oh Honey..." Mum said. "We're sorry for asking, how about we change the topic?" Astrid nodded.
"Yeah, Sorry, I shouldn't of pried into your personal life... better luck next time!" I said innocently.
The conversation stirred off to the weather as I thought about everything. Astrid can't bear children... what use is she to Hiccup?
Ooohhhh!! Fray is a good observer don't ya reckon?
I actually hate her already... and I created her! (Tbh Fray's part in the story is totally improvised! I already know how this story is gonna end, I just wanted to make the build up to climax more exciting and interesting so I added Fray... not sure where this idea is heading!)
