The cops were called, they saw the video, and arrested William. Raine was still in shock. I could see her wanting to cry, but the police were questioning her. You know, the basic things--how long has this been going on, why didn't you ever call us, did he threaten you at all, did he go through with his attempt tonight...? Raine just gave them whispered answers as she clung onto her blanket that hid her naked body.
I hadn't realized William had gotten so close.
The police finally left and we all looked at Raine. She looked at all of us and forced a smile. "Can I be by myself for a minute?"
We left and I exhaled. "That was bad."
"I can't believe that bastard hurt my little girl!" Raine's dad snarled.
"Why didn't she tell us?" her mom whispered to herself.
"Mom, Dad... How about we go for a drive?" Savanna smiled.
Cody tagged along and the four of them left. I looked at Angel and Shianne. I wanted to cry, but I knew I shouldn't. It wasn't me who almost got violated tonight. It wasn't me who had gone through my whole life being abused. It was Raine. And all that I could imagine was her sitting on her bed, still holding her blanket to herself, crying of shock and relief.
My phone buzzed in my pocket and I looked at the message.
Hey, Kourt. ;) Watcha up to?? -Jack
I'll ttyl. Not a good time right now. ~Kourt.
You ok?? -Jack
I sighed and ignored the message. I put my phone in my pocket and looked at Shianne and Angel.
"I'm gonna go for a walk," I said and left the house.
I put my hands in my pockets and walked around the block. I let the stars and moon be my guide. I wanted to help Raine. I wanted to do something about what happened. And what still happens all around the world. To ever one in three women, and one in six men. I wanted to start some organization. So people could finally speak up.
Like I should've five years ago.
More on that later. I wasn't about to dwell on my past when Raine was still in shock. I knew it was selfish of me to be out on a walk, but I just needed to clear my head. My mind couldn't grasp the constant surprises that were coming my way. Who knew what would happen next? I felt my phone go off again, but I didn't bother to look at it.
I finally put it on silent and started to slowly walk back to Raine's house. Mosquitoes tried to bite me, but I killed them as soon as I felt them on me. I walked through the front door and Shianne was sitting on the couch. I closed the door and she looked up at me.
"You were gone a while," Shianne said.
"Yeah," I cleared my throat. "I just needed to clear my head."
"You know you're a spitting image of Mom?" she chuckled.
"You remember her?" I asked.
She shook her head. "I sometimes look through her old pictures. You look exactly like her."
"Why are you telling me this?" I asked.
She shrugged. "I just finally realized why you were always 'daddy's little girl.' I thought he would've hated you, like I did at one point. But every time I look through these photos of her, I understand."
"You know... Dad kinda scared me a little. Like, he always seemed...possesive--if he wasn't in his room being depressed all day," I said.
"I noticed that to. It wasn't like an every day thing though," Shianne smiled at me.
"Well, um... It's been a long night. I'm going to bed," I said going up to Raine's room. The door was slightly open, but I knocked any way.
"Come in," Raine said.
I pushed open the door and stepped in. I smiled at her. She was sitting on her bed, legs crossed, and she was wearing a sweater and sweat-pants.
"Um... Feeling any better?" I asked.
"I will," she nodded.
"At least he didn't seriously, like... Actually do--"
"I get it," she chuckled lightly. "And yeah. I guess I was a little lucky tonight."
"Well, it was all Angel," I said. "Where is Angel, anyway?"
"Sleeping," Raine pointed behind me and I saw Angel sleeping on her sleeping bag.
"I'm gonna crash, too," I said spreading out my sleeping bag again.
"Kourtney," Raine said.
I looked at her. "Yeah?"
"You okay? You seem a little...upset," she said.
"It's been a long night, is all," I gave off a convincing smile and laid in my sleeping bag.
As soon as my eyes closed, horror began. Five years ago replayed in my head and it was terrible. It was almost like it was happening again. His hands, crushing my arms. I could still smell his bad breath from him not exactly keeping up with his hygene. The lust was overly exposed in his eyes. The moment he pinned my back on the leather seats of the truck, I jolted awake.
I wiped my tears, thankful I hadn't screamed or woken anyone up. I brought my knees to my chin and my hands to the back of my head. I rocked back and forth slightly. I looked around the room and everyone was asleep. I saw Shianne sleeping right next to me. I laid back down and slept the rest of the night dreamlessly.
