My ears were nearly deafened by the massive explosion. The ground beneath me shook violently as we struggled to keep ourselves balanced.
Before I could regain my senses, someone burst in, shouting "The wall has been destroyed! Run for your lives!" and before either of us could actually question him he ran back outside.
"We need to move" spoke the lieutenant, "NOW!"
We burst out of the hut, my arm in his for support. The few remaining survivors were rushing past us, heading towards the homes to form one last line of defense.
The last line of defense before all hope was lost.
I didn't dare look back for fear of coming face to face with another monster, I couldn't risk it. My leg and sides burned in pain as I forced myself to run, getting closer and closer to the houses by the second.
Me and my comrade took shelter in the nearest house, rested for a moment, and then went out through the back door.
By now the firing had begun, but it didn't last long. The men's brave cries soon turned in to screams of agony and terror. I couldn't even imagine the hideous deaths they were met with.
Ducking through alleyways and behind houses, we quickly made our way towards the cellars. The machines hadn't made it to us yet, though I knew they would be coming for us soon. They wouldn't rest until every last human was eliminated from existence.
We didn't dare head towards the cellars, we couldn't risk it.
"Let's stop here" I panted before entering a house near the outskirts of the half destroyed city. "We'll rest here and make a plan."
"O..okay" gasped the lieutenant, closing the door behind us.
We took a few deep breaths, trying to steady our heartbeat. I looked around, observing the interior and components of the house. Slowly, my gaze shifted towards the lieutenant, he wasn't looking too good. But then again, who would be looking good in such a situation?
Though, I never really realized how handsome he was. Handsome was an understatement though. He was strikingly charming. His eyes were actually a really beautiful shade of green, sea green maybe? His nose and mouth were perfectly shaped and his blonde hair was like thin strands of gold.
"Something wrong?" asked the lieutenant.
"Oh nothing" I responded, slightly embarrassed
"Right" he smirked.
That was awkward, but I had to stay focused on the bigger thing. I cautiously peeked in to a window and looked out.
"They're everywhere" I whispered. "There's no way of escape."
"There has to be another way, we will make it" spoke the lieutenant.
"It's pointless, don't you see?" I asked.
"It will be pointless if we don't try, I didn't come all this way to leave you to die alone. I am not going to leave you here. Now, are you coming or not?" he asked holding out his hand to me.
I looked up at him, I admired his courage and determination so much. Those were two out of all the excellent qualities he possessed. With just a moment's hesitation, I grabbed his hand.
"Let's do this" we said in unison.
Making it to the backside of the wall was easier than we thought, but it was only when we made it there that the real problem was presented to us.
I had already speculated that there would be many machines guarding all the exits, but they seemed a lot more up close. Who am I kidding, they were in the thousands at least.
