I made my way down the dull endless staircase, thinking about all that I had just been told. All that I had just learned about the relatively peaceful AI, their city and how they were heartlessly tortured. It was just..overwhelming and sad. The world I lived in truly was a cruel and heartless place.
"The world isn't so bad Nico" spoke a dark voice in my head.
It waited a moment for me to respond, but I didn't, so it went on.
"Where you stand right now though, it is undoubtedly harsh. Join me, and you could live happily with anything you desire. Food, water, anything you name. All I ask is that you give your friends up to me, that's all."
He said it so simply, like I'd just do it. But no, that wasn't me, and it never would be.
"Fat chance, I'm not giving up my friends for anything, so go away" I replied unmoved.
"They're not even your friends are they? You don't even know them well. Tell me Nico, what do you stand to gain from protecting some random people just because they took you in?"
"More than I could gain from coming to you" I answered back.
"Don't you want to know your past? Don't you want to know who your mother and father were?"
I didn't reply, my curiosity killing me but I couldn't give any sign of emotion to him.
"You try and hide it Nico, but we are closer than you think. I know your past, and if you join me, I can tell you everything you want to know. All I ask in return is for you to do the simple job of delivering the other humans to me" the mysterious voice said.
"You'll have to prove to me that you really know who I am before I trust you like that. And until you do, I'm shutting you out of my head" I stated firmly, taking a few more steps down the stairs.
"Oh it isn't that simple boy. I'm not leaving you alone. I know what goes on in your head and what thoughts you are having. I know what emotions you feel towards others and I know where you are as long as you are conscious. And I will bring you to my side one way or another. Check the diary you picked up today, and then tell me of your decision. Don't disappoint me."
And with that his voice went quiet.
I stood there pondering over his words, both interested and scared about what he..whatever he was.. had just told me. I had a good mind to check the diary out as soon as I got finished with the jobs. But I had no idea what he meant about making decisions. Whatever it was..it didn't sound pretty. I didn't want to stick around to find out.
"Hey Nico, you up there?" I heard Alex call to me from a few floors below.
Getting knocked out of my trance I replied, "Y..yes I'll be down in a sec!"
And like that I dashed down the stairs at top speed, now more eager than ever to see the diary and what lay inside it.
