We rushed down the stairs to the storage room, and found all the others there too.
"What happened?" Alex asked Carl with worry, panting from the running.
"I don't know man, but something bad has happened" he replied with an equal amount of worry in his voice.
"The noise came from in there?" I asked Carl, though I already knew the answer.
"Yeah, and it sounded like it came from deep within it" answered Jonathan.
"Deep within it?" I thought to myself. "Wait a minute..wouldn't that mean.." I looked over at Sam and his look said it all.
The vials!
I didn't wait for anyone else. I pushed open the door and instantly stopped in my tracks.
Glass...shattered glass all over the floor. No tubes lay on the shelves. No tubes in sight. All of them were on the floor, broken and spread out in hundreds of irregular pieces
"No no no" I whispered in horror, "This can't be"
I ran forwards, not caring about how many glass shards there were on the floor, but no matter how further forward I went, the same sight awaited me. But I wasn't concerned about these vials; they were empty to begin with. No, the ones I were concerned about were those eleven vials which had the liquid in them.
But they weren't where they should have been, they weren't there.
I looked down in hopes that I could salvage some of the life sustainer, but to my surprise there was absolutely nothing on the floor. Nothing, not even the glass shards that had littered so much of the floor, and most definitely not any type of liquid.
Someone or something had stolen them.
"Nico, what's going on?" Carl asked, sprinting over to me with the others behind me.
"They're gone, a..all gone" I whispered, now slightly trembling. "The elixir, i..it's gone"
"You can't be serious" he replied, looking at the empty racks. "Who did this?"
"Um guys" Jonathan said, pointing towards a circular hole in the large exterior glass wall. "I think I've got an answer to that"
"Oh hell no" James mumbled, "You're telling me one of the machines did this?"
"Apparently so" I replied hesitantly, looking back at him, my face pale.
"But..a machine alone, or even two AI's together couldn't have done this" Michael said, "A machine that small wouldn't have possessed the mental capability to destroy all of these, and after that either steal the ones with the elixir, or somehow magically drain the liquid off the floor if those cylinders had met the same fate the others did."
"What are you suggesting?" Sam inquired, looking at him curiously, but with a slight bit of hesitation apparent in his voice too.
"I'm suggesting sabotage, sabotage by someone here. A human adversary in league with the machines" Michael stated plainly, throwing us all glares.
After a few seconds of silence, Alex replied "Don't be ridiculous Mike, that's crazy talk. Who'd go towards the machine's side? We all are aware of what they've done to us, and we've all experienced the war in some form"
"Not all of us" James spoke, and all eyes turned to me.
"No, it's not me, I swear!" I exclaimed, looking at Alex and Sam anxiously for help.
"Yeah Michael, Nico couldn't have done it. He was with me the whole time!" Alex pointed out, taking my side.
"Yeah, I know Nico well enough to come to the conclusion that he would never have done it" Sam stated, walking over to me. "He is to be trusted as we each trust each other. Understood?"
"It's not like we trust each other that much anyway" James spat, glaring at Michael. "And you're not to be eliminated from the suspect list. For all we know you could have stolen the vials!"
"Hey hey calm down everyone!" Carl and Jonathan ordered, looking away sheepishly for a fraction of a second when everyone turned to me.
"I don't know who did this, but fighting won't do us any good" Carl said.
"We need to focus on upping our defenses, and make sure we each have a weapon at all times, and make sure we find some source of water, and fast. The serum will only last us so long. So stop wasting time bickering like children and let's get to it!" Jonathan added seriously, to which everyone nodded begrudgingly.
Everyone walked out of the room, a dark mood upon all of us, save for maybe myself. But indeed I couldn't deny I was frustrated at this.
And I was scared.
I really was.
"Who had done this?" I thought to myself, "Why would any one of us sabotage the others like this, and who would do this?"
I pondered over this for a moment, and my mind pin pointed the only possible person who could have done this, James.
It had to be him, it had to be. He seemed to be just the type.
I decided to put this case forward to Michael, but then I stopped. Maybe that wasn't such a good idea. Everyone was so upset over this incident, and the tensions were high. Pointing my finger at James almost immediately would bound to cause more violence and tension, not to mention bringing me to the top of the suspect list.
So I could resort to the alternative, which was spend some time with James. After all, we now needed supplies.
And that's just what I was going to do.
Note thingy: Hey everyone! New chapter up! Woo!! It's bad but oh well xd. The next chapter will be much better i assure you all! Thanks for reading!!!
