Day 183

The days have been rough, particularly these past few. Following the fall of bases Bravo and Charlie last week this is now the last human base on the planet.

Supplies are short, morale is at an all time low and any proper equipment is out of the question. Are numbers are few, and there is the thought, no, the fact, everyone knows.

This will be the last war.

The machines were spotted crossing the Hudson river yesterday, I expect them to arrive in an hour, it could be sooner.

We have lost everything, our families, our homes, our regular lives. Now, we have lost the one thing which kept us fighting for our cause.

Hope

But, even when all hope seems lost, there is always a way. You, my son, are our last chance. Our last chance to survive, to undo the damage caused by us, to repopulate the Earth and to bring the era of machines to an end.

Whatever happens Nico, never lose hope, never lose sight of the cause you are fighting for. Never forget how important this is to us all.

Make me proud, don't fail, don't let our efforts go to waste.

Take care Nico.

"It's time Bianca" spoke the lieutenant.

I nodded and tucked my diary in my shirt pocket. Gently picking up Nico from his crib, I made my way towards the cellars.

On the outside these cellars appear to be normal..well..cellars but like all great things it has it's secrets.

We had torture chambers down here which were only accessible through DNA scanning. In earlier times, potential terrorists used to be brought here for questioning. Now, we have developed it to suit our needs.

Me and my lieutenant opened the secret pathway. We made sure the door was closed behind us and moved forward.

We unlocked the doors of the sleeping chamber. I set Nico and my diary down on some old bedding sheets and set to work of turning on the systems. I switched on the circuits and turned on the machine. All systems were go.

Then the alarm sounded.

"Shit" swore the lieutenant, "Looks like the machines are here."

"Da** it, hurry! Get the tank ready!

"Sure thing" he answered quickly. He sprinted towards the tank and began filling it with H20-2No-Xe-C3H2l.

As he did that, I picked up Nico and looked in to his eyes. He stared back in to mine. He looked lost, and confused. He could sense that something was troubling me.

I didn't want to leave him, he was my only living son and he was so young. Could I just leave him forever? I couldn't do that, he needed a mother.

"Ma'am please, hurry up! We don't have much time!" shouted the lieutenant.

He was right, we had to get back before the machines attacked. We couldn't risk the enemy finding the sleeping chamber. It was much too important. Nico was much too important.

I placed Nico in the sleeping tank and proceeded to attach wires and cables all over his body. Nico must have been seen that I was sad and started crying. "Shh shh shh" I comforted him, hugging him tightly. "Everything will be ok Nico, be brave for me," I said, tears forming in my eyes.
