I woke gasping for air, my heart all over the place. I had just heard a noise, I was sure of it. I was about to go check out the window when I saw it, a shadow form behind me. I had fallen asleep in front of the TV, I was too scared to be anywhere else and I refused for Jess to stay. He had already done so much for me.
The shadow was unmoving, resting against the wall in front of me. The person was outside. The person was watching me from the window. And that's when I remembered that that very window was faulty, you could open it with barely a shove. I began to breathe heavily. I couldn't move, I couldn't think. All I could do was hope that it wasn't him.
And after a while it walked away. The shadow disappeared and I could breath again. I was about to lie back down on the sofa, my form all sweaty when the door bell rang.
I froze, not wanting to open it. I didn't want whoever was out there to come inside. But another part of me wanted me to go, to prove myself wrong, that it wasn't who I thought it was. Stop being such a wuss and go check. You had training, you can defend yourself.
So I took a shaky breath and made my way for the door, not before grabbing a huge kitchen knife. I looked through the peephole, there was no one there, but it also meant that they could be hiding.
I opened the door slowly, holding the handle tight, preparing myself to shut it if anything came charging at me. But there was nothing, just the silence of the night being disrupted by lonely crickets.
I took deep ragged breaths. Maybe I imagined it? I definitely did. So I began to close the door when a black box with a pale pink bow caught my eye. I cautiously bent down and picked it up. I shook it, there wasn't much noise, it didn't sound like a bomb.
I sighed out, feeling some of the fear fizz away from my stomach. I locked the house door and checked it three times. When I was sure I was safe, I turned on the living room lights, sat on the sofa and placed the box in front of me. I just stared at it.
I was tempted to open it and find out what was inside. But I still feared that whatever it was would jump out at me. So I just sat there, staring. I finally saw it, a little tag with his initial on it.
My body didn't once stop trembling and suddenly I was crying. He found me. I couldn't be alone, so I hurriedly dialed a number and waited, and waited, and waited until I got fed up. Mel wasn't answering, I just hoped that she was okay.
I dialed another number and after a minute it was answered. I rushed to the window and watched his bedroom light switch on.
"Babe?" Came his breathy answer.
"Please come over." I begged, I was still crying, my voice trembling under a fear stricken trance.
"What happened?" He was fully awake now.
"J-just come over, please hurry." I gripped at the window pane watching a faint silhouette in his room rush about.
"Okay I am coming. Just stay put and don't open the doors. Do you have a spare key?" He asked as I heard him rush down his stairs.
"In the tiny hole in the tree."
"Okay, I am going to cut the call, I will be over right now." I was about to object, but I was too slow. He had already cut it.
I dropped to the floor, pushed myself into a corner, back first, and tucked my knees to my chest. I looked around the eerily quiet house, it was too big for me. Too many places in which he could be hidden.
And then there was the box, just sitting there. Staring at me with a devilish smirk. I wanted to open the thing, but fear kept stopping my legs from carrying me over to it.
