Christmas is slowly approaching and I haven't seen Piero since he left to go on tour. The only time I was able to see his face was on December 10th, my birthday as I turned 19. He called me before I headed off to bed and wished he could be with me. The way his eyes were yearning to be in my company said it all. Since then, I've been counting down the days till I get to see him and give him his gift from me, the watch.
Other than thinking about the arrival of Piero, I knew that my brother, Matteo, and my sister, Vera, were coming to Venice to celebrate Christmas for the first time in 5 years. I haven't seen them since I moved back to Italy, so I was looking forward to being able to spend time with my whole family. My mother, Giulia, on the other hand, was going over to Turkey to visit her sister during the Christmas period. She would only be at the house briefly to pack her things and leave. I haven't been able to speak properly with my mother for ages, she's always been so busy that she doesn't want to talk to me or can't when I give her a text or phone call. Melissa and Katia decided to distract me from grief as we sat on my bed, talking and watching my favorite movie, Mary Poppins.
"So, Katia." Melissa paused as she grabbed some popcorn and rested her head on my lap, "Why do you like Gianluca so much?"
Katia spat out her drink before she was able to swallow it, "What!? I do not!"
"Yes, you do." I giggled, "We can all see it. When he talks to you, you melt in a puddle of embarrassment."
"Fiore!" Katia screamed, her face turning completely red, "Yes okay, I like Gianluca. So what? He's probably got a girlfriend."
"Actually," I said, taking a long breath through my nose, "He doesn't. I was supposed to go on a date with him and Ignazio. But now that Piero has asked me to be his, Gianluca is all yours."
My phone immediately buzzed, and when I looked at the screen, I saw an incoming call from Piero. "Okay you two, shut up!" I exclaimed, but Melissa and Katia sat up right by me, wanting to hear the conversation as I answered the call.
"Ciao amore mio! I hope you're doing well today." Piero cheerfully spoke on the other side of the phone.
"Ciao Piero, I'm doing well." I giggled with a blush, "How's Japan? I see your tour is going well."
"Amore, the streets of Tokyo are just beautiful. I wish you were here to see the fireworks they displayed in our honor."
"I do too Piero, but you know that I can't leave the house." I continued, deciding to then speak my next sentence in Italian just for giggles, "Amore mio, Quando torni a casa per Natale? Ti sei perso il mio compleanno." I wanted to see what date he would give me this time for his return for Christmas.
"Presto, amore mio, non oserei perdere il mio primo Natale con te tra un po. I have so many gifts I want to give to you. I promise I'll be home soon enough. Gianluca and Ignazio will be coming too if that's okay? Melissa and Katia are going to be there too I presume?"
I saw Katia and Melissa look at me as I blushed cutely, "No, Melissa and Katia are staying at a hotel near here. Gianluca and Ignazio are going to have to stay with them if they're not going home for Christmas."
"Okay, amore. Listen, I have to go. It's late here so I just wanted to check if my flower is okay." He spoke, giving a sigh at the end of his sentence, "I'm very sorry that I have to torture you like this."
"No no, Piero, amore." I spoke, attempting not to cry, "I will shower you in kisses, you are not hurting me in any way possible. Now, stop thinking of me. Get some sleep, rest your vocal cords and enjoy your tour. I'll be waiting for your next call my love."
"Till next time, buonanotte il mio dolce Fiore." He chuckled to me.
"Buonanotte mio bel Piero." I wished him goodnight.
