Chapter 8 - Long way home.

Tony stood triumphantly in front of the mirror. I can do this. He repeated to himself, I can do this. He carefully stepped out of his room. He walked to Peters room creaking the door open and peeking in. Peter lay there in his kiddie bed fast asleep sucking in his thumb.

"Wakey, wakey sleepy head." He whispered tapping Peters' nose. Peter cracked his eyes open when he noticed it was Tony he immediately said,

"Dad!" Tony looked down at him proudly.

"Come on son, family breakfast time." He said picking Peter up and carrying him to the elevator and down to the kitchen where Clint and Natasha were busy making breakfast. Clint was good at it because of his 2 kids and Natasha cause of her undercover work as a nanny once. She had to make snacks for the kids all the time. Thor was sitting at the table polishing Mjolner.

"Where's Bruce?" Tony asked.

"Where do you think he is?" Natasha, Tony rolled his eyes. Of course, Bruce was in the lab. Tony set Peter down next to Thor while he headed to the elevator. He pressed floor 77 (I'm sorry, I don't know what's official level the lab is on.) as he went up all he could think of was Steve. Without distractions Tony would only be sad, so he and his teammates distracted themselves as much as possible. They were always doing something whether it involved Peter or not. Tony sighed and walked into the lab. There was Bruce sitting on a bench holding a bottle of beer.

"Doc? Hey, you want to talk about it?" Tony asked softly since every time Bruce walked in on Tony being upset he would always ask, 'Do you want to talk about it?' Bruce bit his lip and looked down but eventually began,

"I don't understand! Everyone is acting so calm about it! Every time I think about Steve I get upset and start turning green. I literally have to play classical music in my room when I'm on my own. Do you cry your eyes out every night? Do you ever think that it is all your fault? That you could have saved him? And Peter! He will never get to know what an amazing man, Steve was! I just wish everything was back to the way it was. No Hydra. No Hydra at all." Bruce said sadly staring at his feet.

"Doc, Peter will know what an amazing man Steve is - was. I tell him stories of the great Captain America every single night. And if there was no Hydra that means no Steve. Because of Hydra Steve crashed the ship and slept. Because of Hydra Steve was here, in this time. Sometimes something bad has to happen so that something good happens. And it isn't your fault. All of us we couldn't have done anything. Okay, Doc? Breakfast is ready. Are you coming?" Tony ended smiling but it didn't reach his eyes. It was more of a comforting smile.

The elevator ride was silent, but not an awkward silence more of a comfortable silence. Back in the kitchen Clint yelled,

"Finally! What took you so long. I'm starving!" He said attacking his plate with vigor. Peter clapped his hands and giggled. Tony sat down next to him and carefully fed him a spoonful of scrambled egg. Peter was slowly getting used to his new diet and Bruce and Tony were constantly trying to figure out a way to fully heal him as fast as possible. After about five spoonfuls Peter decided he was done and reached out for his bottle of milk. Thor chuckled and handed it to him, while Peter drank the rest of the Avengers finished their meal, then helped bring all the dishes to the washing machine which washed and put all the dishes away by itself because Tony was bored and lazy one day and decided to build it since he was with way more people in the Tower.  Suddenly Thor said softly,

"My friends, I have something to say." Every one looked up immediately. Thor had never spoken so normally they immediately peeked up.

"Loki," at the mention of Loki Tony growled remembering the irritating evil little brother of Thor. " has been banished of Asgard. I thought he could stay here." He said hopefully. The Avengers looked at Tony, with Steve gone Tony had turned into somewhat of their leader you could say. Tony bit his lip but eventually nodded,

"If he lives here we will have some conditions that will apply to him. Okay Thor?" Tony said looking hard at Thor.

"Thank you, man of Iron! Thank you!" Suddenly he turned to the balcony, " Loki! LOKI! Man of Iron has given you permission to stay! Come in!" Tony looked incredulously at Thor as he and Bruce shared a look. He had been there the entire time? Thor?! He thought to himself. Loki tentatively stepped into the living room. He had chains around his neck, wrists and chest. Shocked the Avengers stared at him.

"Hello." Loki said wriggling around a bit but eventually giving up.

"Loki. These bracelets prevents you from leaving this Tower and using your powers without my consent. Understand?" Thor said removing the chains and replacing them with the steel bracelets which seemed to have Asgardian markings on them that glowed a light blue. Loki rolled his eyes and nodded. Then he looked at each of the Avengers in turn. He stopped at Peter. Then he turned around twice as if he was looking for something.

"Where is the America man?" He asked raising his eyebrow. Tony stopped breathing for a second.

"Brother, America man had gone to the land of After (I think that that is what they would call death but I don't know so...)" Thor said gently.

"Oh. Sorry for the loss. Who is this child? Let me guess? Adopted, Man of Iron and America man, before land of After for America man?" Loki asked inquiringly.

"Bingo." Tony said weakly.
