I sat down on the last seat as usual and rummaged through my bag for my history homework. I silently cursed under my breath when I couldn't find it.
I sighed and pushed my hair back before searching for it again. The bell rang and everybody settled in their seats. I finally gave up trying to look for it and leaned back in my seat.
I opened the back of my notebook and doodled. I shook my pen to make it work. Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed a black and blue blur of a head near the doorway.
I didn't give myself the trouble of raising my head to look at who it was.
"You're late.",Jamie said.
"Sorry.",he called out. His voice and accent nudged my curiosity. I raised my head to look at him.
He had his backpack slung over one shoulder. He had coal black hair and piercing blue eyes. His eyes scanned for a seat. He finally spotted an empty seat next to me and settled down.
My eyes followed him until he had settled down. I abruptly stopped doodling. He noticed me staring and passed me a crooked grin and small wave.
I turned my head back towards my book and started scribbling again. My pen glided over the page, drawing smooth curves and shapes.
"That's nice work.",he said in a slow and deliberate British accent.
I turned towards him. He still had a smile on his face. I smiled back at him slowly.
"Thanks.",I whispered.
"I'm Caspian.",he said.
Damn, his name sounded royal.
"Amy. Nice to meet you.",I said.
I usually didn't talk much to people but I was okay with talking to him. He seemed like an easygoing person.
"So for your next history assignment, you can choose partners.",Jamie said, only the word 'partner' of which I heard.
I looked around as everyone made a wild grab at their current favourite person in the room.
It was moments like these that I badly missed Melody. If she had been here, she would have a cracked a joke or two and then would've set a time for us to meet up at either of our houses.
I looked around as best friends linked their arms together, laughing as they discussed their topic. I saw some couples paired up.
I was left all alone.
"Hey, uh, if you don't mind, could we pair up? I don't know anyone here. It's rather intimidating here, really.",Caspian said, British accent swiftly escaping his mouth.
I didn't have anybody else anyway.
I pursed my lips and nodded nonchalantly.I would've gladly done the project if it were individual work. Since I had no option, I had to go with him.
I took in a deep breath and turned around to look at him. He smiled and turned in his seat. My eyes scanned his body. He was sporting a blue t shirt along with camo pants.
"What's our topic?",he asked.
"Renaissance. Europe.",I said, my eyes searching the ground for some non-existent proof of a new scientific revolution.
"Great. I happen to love the Renaissance period. This project is going to be fun. Is it an essay?",he asked.
"Yes.",I looked up. My hands played with themselves.
