♡"Mom? Dad? Anyone home?",I called, tugging my suitcase into the house and closing the door behind me.
I heard some conversation going on in the kitchen followed by some footsteps. Then mom stepped out of the kitchen with a phone held to her ear.
When she saw me, her face lit up. She said something into the phone and cut it before walking towards me with her arms stretched out.
She hugged me tightly.
"What a surprise! You weren't supposed to be back till the end of the month!",she said with a hearty laugh.
"Just in time, I would say. I have something to show to you. Go change and come down quickly.",she smiled and ruffled my hair.A familiar sense of warmth enveloped me as I hugged her back tightly.
"Mom...it's Mel.",I said, my voice taking on a melancholy tone."Sweetheart is everything alright?",mom said as she pulled back and held my shoulders gently.
I shook my head from side to side as my lower lip quivered.
"They're putting her down. In a week. Six more days actually.""What?!"
"Yeah. That's why I had to cut the trip short.",I said, trying not to choke on my words.
"Sweetie, it's alright.",mom said and gently stroked my hair.
I bit my lip and forced myself to nod.
How had I fooled myself into thinking that I was living my best life when I was with Blaze at the police station when in reality, my best friend was about to die and my parents weren't we're not even going to be together?
"Sweetie go get changed. I have something that will probably cheer you up.",mom said with a sad smile and nudged me towards my room.
I pursed my lips and nodded as I walked up the staircase, dragging my heavy suitcase behind me.
I remembered the time Melody and I had first met. It was in third grade.
Her mother was helping her ride a cycle without training wheels."Mommy! Don't let go! I'm not ready yet!", her tiny voice shrieked as the cycle wobbled dangerously along the path.
"Don't worry, sweetheart, mommy's right here.",the mother said.
She closed her eyes and peeked with one eye open. Her hands trembled on the handlebars. Her long, dark hair flowed behind her as her beautiful eyes glinted in the sunlight. She was wearing a light blue cycling helmet and similar knee pads and elbow pads.
I couldn't help being amused. I had learnt to cycle without training wheels in first grade.
I walked over to the pavement where she was trying to cycle. The new girl in the neighbourhood was everyone's interest now. She looked like a nice girl so I wanted to talk to her.
"Mommyyyy! Don't let go! I'm scared! I'm not ready yet!",she shrieked again.
Melody was her name, I had heard somebody at school talking.
"Don't worry sweetie."
But the lady slowly let go of her grip on the cycle as Melody cycled on her own.
She smiled and stood in her place as she proudly watched her daughter do it on her own."You're right here with me, aren't you Mommy?",Melody called out.
"Right here sweetheart!",her mother called from behind her.
