Alyssa and I were joking around as we carried all of our bags to the boys’ house. With a lot of effort Alyssa managed to open the door and I followed behind. ‘Who are those people, Ni?’ she said as Niall got up and helped her with the bags. They were blocking my way, so I had no idea who they were talking about. Did they invite their families or friends? Why didn’t Liam tell me people were coming over? Niall kissed Alyssa shortly before turning to me with a serious look. ‘Demi, I called your foster parents and invited them over,’ Niall said, stepping aside. My breath hitched when I saw them sitting on the couch. I didn’t realize I missed them so much until I saw them sitting on the couch. ‘Demi!’ my foster mom yelled, jumping up and engulfing me in a tight hug. Tears welled up in my eyes as she refused to let me go and stroked my hair softly. ‘What were you thinking? L.A.? You’ve gone to the other side of the world!’ she sniffled. ‘I’m sorry, but I didn’t feel like I had another choice because of Daniel and-’ I felt a lump in my throat and sighed. ‘It’s okay, everyone makes bad decisions.’ ‘I wouldn’t necessarily call this a bad decision…’ I said, and I felt my cheeks heat up as I glanced at Liam, who smirked knowingly at me. My foster mom pulled away from me and looked at me questioningly. ‘If I hadn’t come here, I wouldn’t have met the boys, Alyssa and my best friend Skylar,’ I said, smiling as I looked at all of them, except for Skylar who had a working shift. I made my way over to Liam, a sudden urge to hold him. He wrapped his arms around me and kissed my cheek. My foster mom started smiling and my foster dad narrowed his eyes. Typical. Always being the protective one. The reason we fought all the time was Daniel and how he wasn’t good enough for me, how he couldn’t be trusted. Now I knew what they meant, I was just too naïve to see it. ‘We’re happy for you dear, but right now we’ve gotta talk.’ The sudden change in her voice had me worried. What was going on? Was there another reason why they came here? Were they going to force me to go back to the U.K. with them? ‘What’s going on?’ I said, tensing in Liam’s arms. ‘Your dad’s here,’ she said. I almost collapsed if it wasn’t for Liam holding me tight. ‘Here as in here in this city?!’ I asked, my voice trembling. ‘Here, as in: in this house.’ ‘What?! Are you out of your mind?!’ I said starting to panic, but Liam held me tight. Footsteps approached from behind me and I froze when I heard him call my name. ‘Demi…’ I reluctantly turned around and faced him. He looked pretty much the same as since I saw him last, except for the stubble coating his cheeks and chin and his tired eyes without the sparkle it always held when we were still a family. ‘Dad.’ He walked towards me with a faint smile on his face, making me press more into Liam’s side. ‘Get him away from here! I don’t want him here!’ I choked out. Tears burned in my eyes. I don’t want this man near me! Why are they doing this to me?! ‘Relax baby, I’m right here,’ Liam whispered soothingly. ‘Go talk to him, nothing can happen, we are here, it’s safe.’ I nodded and pecked his lips. He’s right. Let’s get this over with. ‘Go talk in my room, it’s more private there,’ Niall said, pointing his head in the direction of his room. It’s good, because his room was on this floor and not upstairs, which means they’ll still be close. I walked into the room and felt shivers run down my back as I heard my dad close the door behind him. My heart was beating rapidly. ‘Demi, why haven’t you visited me or at least answered my letters and phone calls?’ my dad asked and I could hear the hurt in his voice. ‘What do you think? You’re crazy! You’ve just gotten out of jail!’ I snapped at him. ‘Mom… My mom is dead because of you!’ I sobbed, hiding my face in my hands. ‘What?! Do you even remember what happened that day?’ ‘I was in a coma for five weeks, when I woke up mom was dead and you were in jail,’ I said, wiping away a few tears and looking up at my dad. ‘I didn’t do it, you know?! There was a drunken truck driver I couldn’t have seen. I was in jail, because I was going mental without your mum and you… they weren’t even sure if you’d wake up. I did some stupid stuff and had to pay for that, but I feel so much better now, ‘cause I have been talking to a therapist.’ He sat down on the bed and I sat down next to him. ‘I loved your mum so much, I still do. I love you too. I would never intentionally hurt you.’ I nodded and sniffled. ‘I’m sorry I accused you. I love you too.’ My dad was quietly crying and pulled me into a hug. ‘It’s okay, I’m happy I got you back. Just don’t leave me again, it would kill me if I lost you again.’ ‘But I can’t leave the boys… I can’t leave Liam.’ ‘Then we’ll stay here. We’ll find a cool place to live,’ he said, holding me at arm’s-length to look at me. We smiled at each other, before hugging again. ‘That sounds great, dad. Thank you.’ I said, smiling.
