\Angelica POV/
A rapid knocking disturbed me from my slumber, frightening me so much that I fell out of my bed. Sluggish, hair a disaster, I made my way towards the front of the castle, muttering curses. It was the middle of the night, everybody was asleep. Where were the guards?
Oh, right. Hamilton gave them a day off, quoting, "We've never been attacked before, why worry for just one night?"
Oh, the fool.
The knocking started up again, louder than before, shaking me from my thoughts. "Hold on," I growled to myself, careful not to be loud, throwing the door open. I took one glance at the flash of the magenta-clathed figure in front of me and abruptly slammed it back shut.
"Hey!" A muffled voice called through the wood, starting the knocking up again. I opened the door to just an inch and glared through the crack, the knocking immediately seizing as their eyes met mine, wide with fear.
"What are you doing here?" I spoke softly, tone laced with warning.
A man I didn't reconize stepped in front of the southern motherfucker, clearing his throat, expression a slab of stone, yet his hands shook. He bowed slightly, surprising me. "Excuse me, dear miss, for I sent your king a letter-"
"You're Madison?" I cocked my head, opening the door just a bit more to look at him fully, straightening.
"Oh, so you've heard." He seemed relieved, although still nervous. "Do all of your people know, or just of high status?"
"I'm the chef," I stared him down as I heard a snort, glaring towards Jefferson with such intensity he instantly quieted down, averting his gaze. "My sisters and I are close with Alexander. The only others who know of this arangement are the selective generals and a couple civilians."
"Good, we'd like to keep this quiet, if you will." Jefferson spoke for the first time, face turning pink in the dim light of the moon. He seemed quite embarrassed about the whole encounter.
"Yes," Madison nodded along with him, turning back towards me. "We thought it'd be good to come when noone's awake, to avoid suspicion. Is Hamilton awake?"
I snorted, running a hand through my thick curls and putting it up into a low ponytail. "Oh, probably. He never seems to sleep. Is it just the two of you?"
"Yes, we thought it'd be safe to leave our people with the guardsmen for the night and check here first." Madison murmured softly.
I thought about it all for a long moment before muttering a low 'come in, then', opening the door and starting to walk down the hallway. I heard the quick scurrying of feet and the door shut softly before a hand pat my shoulder, a southern accent drawling. "What's your name, miss-?"
I whirled around, pulling a knife out of my nightgown with quick succession and holding it up to Jefferson's neck, staring hard up at him. He visibly gulped, murmuring quietly. "Now, don't be hasty..".
"You're lucky you're a king, otherwise I'd kill you myself." I hissed, drawing back and continuing down the hallway again. Out of the corner of my eye I saw Madison snort, walking next to me. With a respectable distance, of course.
"I'm James. James Madison." He spoke quietly, wary of the dark hallway, presumably wondering where the guards were.
I decided to trust the skittish man. "Angelica."
"Lovely name."
"Thank you, I got it for my birthday."
It took James a moment but when it hit him he snorted, covering his mouth, eyes crinkling. I managed to keep my composure, a smirk slipping through.
