\Madison POV/

I was having a lovely chat with Hamilton's second-in-command when a short - perhaps a teen? - slammed the door open, out of breath. Lauren immediately stopped talking, taking notice of her abrupt entrance.

"Johnny!" The girl squealed, smoothing out her yellow dress. "Guess what I just saw Alex doing!"

"Let me guess, Pegs," Laurens drawled, setting down his pen with a dramatic sigh. "Lexi slumped over his desk again, a quill up his nose? Or, perhaps, half-fallen off the bed, feathers from his pillow strung about?"

It seems Hamilton as gotten caught in some very interesting positions.

"Better." 'Pegs' grinned impossibly widened. "Him and Jefferson were snuggling on his bed. I bet Mr. Thomas heard him struggling with the storm, and you know how Alex acts when he has one of his scares."

"Holy shit," I breathed, and her eyes snapped to mine. She seemed to take notice of me for the first time.

"Who may you be?" She tilted her head, momentarily distracted. I took notice in slight amusement that Lauren's eyes were wide from the news.

"James Madison, Mr. Thomas's second-in-command." I stuck out my hand and she took it with surprising strength, masking the flash of embarrassment that flicked across her face well.

"Margarita Schuyler Van Rensselaer." The girl spoke with confidence, held high. "But I like to go by Peggy."

We shook, gaze held firm, before she broke into a fit of giggles. I could no longer contain the smile on my face, and out of the corner of my eye, I saw Laurens, smiling softly.

"Well, it was nice meeting you, sir!" The young teen gave a quick mock salute, smile dopey. She gave a nod towards Laurens - a look that was clear she wanted to continue the discussion further another time - and practically skipped out of the room. This time she closed the door gently, much unlike her entrance.

"That was one of the cooks," Laurens spoke after a gentle moment, a soft smile om his face as he stared at the door, lost in thought.

"Does she know someone named Angelica?" I voiced, thinking back to the woman who had let Thomas and I in the other night.

Laurens seemed to snap out of whatever trance he was in, clearing his throat and picking his pen back up again, a soft pink blushing his cheeks. "Well, yeah. They're sisters, along with Eliza, whom I'm not sure you've met. They're all cooks, despite their father owning a large portion of land to the west. They quite enjoy cooking.." He mumbled off.

"Oh!" I tried to think back to the lady with dark hair dressed in blue. "I might've bumped into her at the infirmary where Hamilton was. Are they-" I struggled slightly to find the right words. "-are they close?"

"If you're asking if Alex fancies her, then yes," Laurens sighed softly, scribbling something down. After a longer glance it looked like he was just doodling in the margins of the paper. "Has been ever since the sisters showed up to find work. And, according to Peggy, she fancies him, too." He seemed saddened for a split-second before the look quickly vanished. I wondered momentarily if I had imagined it.

"I'd assume she's not the only one who fancies the King." I mused, looking out the window. A girl in blue chased a butterfly in circles around a girl in red, loud laughter completing the soft scene.

Lauren's response was quick. "What do you mean?"

I tilted my head at the man, whose eyes glanced around quickly, almost nervously. Oh. Oh.
