Gazing up at the overcast sky as a chill hung in the air, Sachi sat on the bleachers deep in thought. For late Spring, it didn't feel like it. The principal gave students half a day of class so that those who wanted to could attend Callie's funeral service later that afternoon.
It was precisely this that lead to conflict between them during their drive to school. She told him she didn't want to go. Her reason was that she and Callie weren't exactly friends. She didn't want to deal with Emma. She had put off confronting her about the note out of respect for Callie.
Kael said that she should ignore Emma and attend, anyway. Her mind made up, Sachi didn't understand why he insisted on her coming. Neither would budge nor compromise leading to a standstill and much frustration.
When they arrived at school, he walked off in a huff and for the rest of the morning avoided her.
She hugged her jacket around her as a wind gust rustled the leaves in the trees. "May I," Emily said. She gestured to the empty space beside her. "Sure," Sachi said.
Emily took a seat. Plain-faced, the brunette wore her hair in a bun and had on a simple black dress.
"Where's your other half?" she said.
Sachi blushed, biting her bottom lip. That was the first time that someone spoke of him as her other half. "He's around," she said.
"Did you two get into a fight?" Emily said. "You both are always joined at the hip."
"Yes," Sachi murmured.
"Do you mind me asking what it was about?" Emily said.
Sachi took in a deep breath and exhaled. "It's about the funeral," she said choosing her words carefully. "You don't want to go?" Emily said at her hesitation. Sachi nodded.
Quiet for a moment, Emily stared out into the empty football field listening to the birds chirping nearby. "I know that you and Callie weren't friends," she said with a faraway look in her eyes.
She shifted, turning her gaze back to Sachi staring at her attentively. "She's gone now," she said, her voice shaky. "I'm sure that if she could take back those mean things that she said to you she would. This funeral is more for us than it is for her. We have to go on living. I think Callie would want you to be there. Please reconsider," she said.
Tear pinpricks filled the corner of Sachi's eyes. "I will," she said.
Wiping her eyes, Emily stood up and pointed. "Seems someone else wants to talk." Sachi followed the direction that she pointed to see Kael headed their way. "I'll take my leave," Emily said.
She stepped off the bleachers onto the hard dirt of the football field. "Hi, Kael," she said walking by him. "Hi," he replied, his eyes fixed on Sachi. "Can we talk?" he said.
Nodding, Sachi scooted over.
He sat down beside her and sighed. Sachi watched the vapors of his breath billow into the chilly air. "I'm sorry," he said blinking away the tears pooling in his eyes. "I was being pushy and not considering your feelings. I don't want you to do something that makes you uncomfortable."
"I changed my mind," Sachi said. She took his hand, intertwining their fingers. "I'm going." Bewildered, he said, "Sachi, I don't want you to feel pressured to-"
"It's my decision," she said. "Okay," he said not wanting to fight anymore.
They stood up. "I just need to change," Sachi said gesturing at her casual attire.
The drive home was quiet except for the bubbly pop music playing on the radio. He pulled into her driveway. "I'll pick you up in half an hour," he said. With a kiss, she stepped out of the car and watched as he backed out and drove away.
