I was almost to his door when Elizabeth stopped me. "Hey can you come here for a second?"
I spun around slowly to face her. Really? Right now? Can't she see I'm busy? I walked up to her desk, watching her type on her computer. "Yes?"
She held her pointer finger up at me in the universal signal for wait. She couldn't have just waited until after I left his office? I got this strange feeling she did this on purpose. She finally looked away from her computer up at me. "I forgot to grab coffee for the other workers today and I usually bring it to them every morning." She started, looking at me.
"Ok?"
"I was hoping since you're still kind of new here and haven't gotten the chance to know everyone that this would be a good opportunity for you. You wouldn't mind picking up the orders for me would you?" She couldn't be serious. A 'good' opportunity for me? She was just being lazy and not wanting to go herself. I'm the personal assistant for Jax there is no reason I would need to know the other workers. Not to be offensive but obtaining a relationship with them would be of no value to me.
I gave her a tight lipped smile. "Can't you get someone else to do it ?"
She frowned at me. Seeming to not like the fact I haven't agreed already. "No one else is available, and since you're roaming the halls I figured you weren't busy. All you have to do is go to the local coffee shop and tell them you're picking up for Elizabeth, everything is already paid for." Roaming the halls? There's literally one hall here, she knew exactly where I was heading. Fine, might as well take the free time being offered to me.
"Fine, if Mr.Albergo needs me tell him I ran to get coffee." I walked off not caring to see the smug look on her face.
"Will do!" She called out after me. Not even a thank you added.
I stopped by my office to grab my purse and keys, choosing to take the stairs instead of the elevator.
By the time I made it outside I was regretting my decision on taking the stairs. The local coffee shop was only two blocks down, lucky for me since I didn't have my car. It was a small family owned business place called "Beans Ahoy" nestled comfortably on the corner of the block.
I inhaled the rich scent of coffee and chocolate as I made my way to the front counter. "Hi ma'am what can I get you today?" The girl at the counter was maybe one or two years younger than me, with long black shiny hair pulled back into a tight ponytail.
I smiled at her. "Hi, I have a pickup for Elizabeth."
Her eyes widened. "The wicked witch of the west sent you?" She whispered over the counter.
"Caroline!" A short lady with an apron on covered in flour came walking up from the back. "What have I told you about calling her that? We treat all our customers with the same respect. Even if she's after poor Dorothy and toto." She winked at me. I laughed at their small banter. Guess I wasn't the only one that didn't like Elizabeth. Caroline rolled her eyes as she went over to get my drinks. There was four in total.
She handed me a receipt before placing the drinks in my hand. "Thank you." I turned to leave when I heard my name being called. I looked to the right spotting Brad in a corner booth waving hysterically at me. I smiled making my way over. "I wasn't expecting to see you here."
He looked from my drinks to me. "Thirsty much?" He smirked. "I'm actually meeting some friends here."
"That's nice, I'm just being the office slave right now."
He laughed at my lame attempt at a joke. "And how's that going for you?"
"Just peachy, I love having unnecessary labor added to my already busy schedule."
He shook his head at me, causing his golden locks to fall in his face. Is it hot in here or is it just me? "Well don't let me stop you, I'll see you later."
I nodded my goodbyes making my way back to the office. This time I was smart enough to use the elevator, not making that mistake again. What was I thinking taking the stairs from the tenth floor? I must not have been thinking at all. I felt my phone vibrate in my pocket. Balancing the drinks in one hand, I dug it to see a text from Jax.
From: Idiot Boss
Where the hell are you?I slipped the phone back into my pocket. No reason to reply when I'm right down the hall. The elevator dinged making the doors slide open letting me out.
Elizabeth was once again typing away on her computer when I dropped the drinks off at her desk. "Here's your order." You could practically see the venom fly out of my mouth.
"Thanks." She didn't even look up from the computer. See if I do her any more favors. "Also the boss is looking for you."
I frowned down at her. "Didn't you tell him I was getting coffee?"
She shrugged."I guess I forgot." She forgot? Let's see how good her memory is when I knock her upside the head. I gave her one last glare as I turned from the desk
I walked into my office dropping my purse in the nearby chair. Digging my phone out my pocket I pulled Jax texts back up.
To: Idiot Boss
Just getting coffee, did you need anything?Clicking send I relaxed in my computer chair, pulling up the list of names. Wait these are... I slapped my hand against my forehead. That's what I was meaning to do! I waited a few minutes to see if he would reply to my text. If so I could ask him about the list and save myself the trip. The thing about Jax though is he's a horrible texter when it has to do with work. He prefers to exchange information face to face if he knows you're in the same building as him.
After ten minutes with no reply, I knew I would have to go down there. I pulled my door open just in time to see two very scary looking guys pass by and make their way to Jax office. They were both dressed in blue suits with firm looks on their faces. I thought about just waiting till they leave but I only had three hours left of my shift. It usually takes me two hours to sort the names and send gifts out. It was either get them now and get it done today, or wait and have two lists to do tomorrow making me have to stay longer. Screw big scary guys, I was not doing double work.
I made my way down the hallway to the end, ignoring Elizabeth questioning look when I arrived at his door. Since apperently my mom never taught me manners, I pushed the door open walking in, not bothering to knock.
All talking ceased as I walked through the door. From the look on their faces I just interrupted a very heated conversation.
"Uh," I tried to ignore the big scary men shooting daggers at me. "Mr.Albergo do you have a minute?"
Jax's eyes landed on me, giving me the once over like he didn't see my outfit earlier. Only this time he seemed to be studying me, like he was trying to put a puzzle together in his mind and I was the final piece. Then he opened his mouth, saying something that would change my life forever. Rather it was a good change or not, I wasn't sure.
