"S-sophia? What are you doing calling from a different number?" She tried to sound nonchalant but I could hear the shake in her voice. She was hiding something.
"How do you know Jax?" There was no reason to beat around the bush. For God's sake she has his number.
She sighed. "I can't talk about this over the phone honey."
"Why not!?" Jax held his hand the moment he heard my voice rising. I slapped his hand away.
"Sophia," She made her voice sound stern. "We will talk about this on the weekend, goodbye." The line went dead.
I stared at the phone in shock. Did she really just hang up on me? "Tell me what's going on?" I turned on Jax.
He shrugged. "I told you."
"My dad was not in the mafia!" He couldn't have been. I would've noticed at some point, right? Unless he and my mom were extremely good at hiding it from me. "I need to go home." I needed to get away from him and all the lies.
He shook his head. "I can't let you leave yet, it's not safe."
"Holding me here against my will is kidnapping."
A smirk covered his face. "Not if you're my wife."
"I'm not your wife!" I raged.
"I can't wait till you learn the whole story." His grin widened.
I sighed, sitting back on the couch. "I wish I never went to that interview." My life has taken a turn I never saw coming. I just wanted to pay my rent! Not become some lost mafia princess.
Jax sat next to me, extremely close. He placed an arm around my shoulder, pulling me into his side. "I wish I knew what you were feeling."
"Confused, scared and every other bad feeling." I don't know why I was confessing this to him, or why I was letting him hold me. For some reason being in his arms made me feel safe. "Did you not feel this way when you found out you were part of the mafia?"
He laughed. "There was no finding out for me, I raised knowing what was expected of me."
"You're older than Damien?"
"Damien is older."
I bit my lip. "I don't know much about the mafia but isn't the first born supposed to take over?"
He nodded. "Only problem is Damien doesn't want it like I do." He wanted to run the mafia?
"Why do you want it?"
"Damien has his future planned out, he wants a wife and kids. As a leader that would always make them a target, and become a weakness for him. I can't have kids and I don't see myself settling down any time soon. I'm better fit for the position."
"What do you mean you can't have kids?" I frowned at him.
"The last female I was with tried trapping me with a baby, making me forget to wear a condom. But she never got pregnant." He shrugged.
"Maybe she's the one that can't have kids."
He looked down at me, a playful smirk on his face. "Do you want to find out? Test your theory?"
I blushed, "No thanks."
"Your loss." He pushed me to the side so he can get up. "You can sleep in the room you changed in, I have work to do."
"Whoa what? I'm not staying the night!" I was OK staying here for a couple of hours but the whole night?
He sighed, dragging a hand down his face. "I don't have the energy to argue with you. Stay if you care for your safety, if not then leave." With that he made his way up the steps.
I glared at his retreating back. Making my way to the front door I gave it a tug, but it didn't budge. Flipping the lock I tried again, nothing. Walking through the kitchen I tried the back door, same results. What the hell?
"You really don't care about your safety, huh?" I spun around, Jax was leaning in the doorway, a disapproving look on his face.
I crossed my arms glaring at him. "So much for being able to leave on my own free will."
"I knew you were stupid enough to try."
"Why can't I get the doors open?"
He smirked. "They're voice activated, for safety reasons." I just continued to glare. "Now get upstairs and stop being an idiot."
"Now get upstairs and stop being an idiot." I mumbled at his retreating back.
"I'm a trained assassin Ms.Deblanco, remember that."
"Are you threatening me?"
He turned slightly looking back at me. "With a mouth as big as yours there's no such thing as whispering." He was about to start walking again then stopped. "Maybe I should fill it with something much bigger." He winked.
I pretended to fake gag. "You're a pig." He laughed, walking off.
I wasn't ready to go upstairs yet, so I decided to explore the rest of his house. I glanced around the kitchen quickly, nothing to really see here. It's obvious no one uses it.
I spotted a hallway to my right, that seemed like a good place to start. Making my way through it the first two doors were empty, not even a bed. He has a lot of extra space in this house. The fourth door is when I finally got some action.
It opened to a set of stairs. I looked over my shoulder, hesitating about going down. What if Jax caught me? Would he care? Maybe this room was off limits. Or maybe it was just a basement full of his dirty laundry.
I shrugged taking the first four steps down. Peeking over the banister all I could see was long stripes of plastic hanging.
Something in my gut was telling me to turn around. You know what they say, curiosity killed the cat.
Throwing caution to the wind I descended down the rest of the stairs. The right side of the basement was full of tools, while the left side was full of the hanging plastic.
Walking to the left, the nerves in my stomach tightened. It was so thick that I couldn't see through it. I laid my hand against it, trying to find an opening. After several failed attempts I finally found a slit. It took both hands to move it to the side, and what I saw on the other side had me screaming in horror.
