Chapter 3: The Promise He Made

          “I expect you to keep your promise this time, Eiji,” Ayako warned.

         Eiji shook his head as he watched Ayako get down from the car. There was not a trace of the irritation that was all over her face just seconds before.

          An expert in hiding her feelings, as usual.

          He parked the car and went down as well.

          A loud commotion drew his attention towards the main gate of the campus.

          “You son of a bitch! I'm gonna fucking kill you!”

          “Not if I kill you first, you asshole!”

        A bawl erupted with those enraged yells. Punches and kicks were thrown and received. Bruises and blood appeared on the guys' body. The fight involved about six mid-aged men and more were joining in.

          Eiji watched all these with indifference.

          Just a regular street fight, he noted.

          The rumble were gaining more and more attention. Students stopped on their way to class to watch the scene and a loose half-circle was starting to form near there.

          The guards were attempting to break off the fight but they were having a hard time.

          “This is a school! You shouldn't be fighting here!”

          “Shut up, douchebag!”

          That's when Eiji noticed the markings on the man's neck.

          That's a gang symbol. I'm sure of it.

          “The police! Let's run!” One of the men involved in the fight hollered as sirens were heard.

          Eiji frowned. So Master was right. Trouble is brewing among gangs here.

          A week ago, Master Katsu talked to him about an important matter.

          “Eiji, you do know that Ayako is in Korea, right?”

          “Yes, Master.”

          Master Katsu looked at the garden but his mind was somewhere else, Eiji knew that. Master Katsu had always been a strong man, his built sturdy and formidable. But now Eiji can see the weariness weighing him down.

          “Our allies had informed as that there is unrest with the gangs in Korea. Gang wars are breaking out left and right and more and more are stepping in other gang's territories. I suspect someone is behind this, someone big but I have no idea who. Our allies there doesn't know either.”

          “Ayako has no idea of this, Master? She went to Korea to observe, right?”

          “She is not a spy, Eiji although that is the excuse she gave me. You know her best since you grew up with her. Did you honestly believe she would go to such lengths for the clan? She loves this clan but not as much as she loves freedom.”

          “Then why did you allow her to go?”

          “My daughter is still young, Eiji. I want her to enjoy as much as she wants. I am guilty enough of deciding her future, I want her to at least be able to decide for her present.”
