I knew Josh had told me not to open his Christmas gift until Christmas Day but I didn't have enough room in my suitcase to take it home and back again along with presents for my family and my clothes. Curiously was also getting the better for me. I'd given the package a little squeeze and feel since he gave it to me. The night before my flight home I tore off the paper to find a tightly folded up navy blue tshirt. Slightly confused, I unfolded it. I laughed out loud as I saw it was from Phantom of the Opera and had the lyrics of Music Of The Night in the shape of the Phantom's mask. Great minds clearly thought alike as I'd given him a very similar tshirt except in black fabric and with the mask in silver!
I went to sleep that night smiling about our matching presents. I had an amazing dream about singing songs from the show with him. As if that would happen, I'd always been a average singer with no confidence for lessons.
When my alarm woke me the next morning I groaned and grumbled, not wanting to leave my cosy bed so early. Everything was packed so I didn't have much to do but I hated waiting around at airports. I always tried to occupy myself by getting something to eat at the over priced cafes so I didn't sit around worrying about getting lost or missing my flight.
I had a quick check around the apartment to make sure I hadn't left anything important out. I double checked that my passport was in my handbag. Then my intercom buzzed. Ugh, not now.
"Who is it?" I asked.
"Taxi for Miss Anna." replied a British voice.
"I didn't order a taxi." I said.
I knew exactly who it was when I heard that laugh. I swore and buzzed him through. I headed out and locked my front door to hear him laughing as he ran up the stairs.
"Screw you, Groban." I teased. "Screw you."
"I'd like that!" he laughed. "But you'd miss your flight if we did. I've come to take you to the airport."
"Thank you darling." I smiled and kissed him as he took my suitcase out of my hand. "Don't look at me though, I'm not wearing make up. It's a hideous sight."
He snorted with disgust. "I don't care. You're beautiful no matter what you say. Besides, you're a cutie with more than beauty. The looks, the brains and humour. You're a rare one. I'm a lucky man!" he told me with a little kiss on the nose.
How adorable was he?
During the taxi ride we made plans for our next date, on New Year's Eve. I flew back on the 30th December and we started work again on the 2nd January. On those two days inbetween we planned to watch films, cuddle up like a cute couple and eat junk food. The dress code was pyjamas.
I was probably going to spend most of my time back home in pyjamas or comfy clothes too. A festive sweater too just to add a little punch.
When we got to JFK Josh carried my suitcase and waited with me while I checked in then walked me to the departures gate. I gave him a polite kiss, no PDA thank you very much.
"You're not going to wait around to make sure the plane's gone are you?" I asked. "Go home and walk Sweeney. He'll like that."
He sighed and rolled his eyes. "One more kiss then I'll go." he obliged.
We hugged each other tight as he gave me a hungry kiss. We were both reluctant to let go but I knew I should.
"Now go home and have a good Christmas." I told him.
"You too." he said, sneaking one more little kiss.
I text him and my family to let them all know once I'd boarded my plane. I watched films, ate food and tried to sleep on the plane but I was too excited and also uncomfortable to relax properly on the flight. I was glad to land at Gatwick and see my big brother waiting for me. I squeaked and ran into his arms.
He was tall and skinny with the same curly ginger hair, freckles and brown eyes. There was no doubt we were siblings and best friends too.
"My Anna Banana!" he laughed and lifted me off the floor with his bear hug.
"My Rupert Bear!" I giggled.
"Good flight?" he asked as we walked to the car arm in arm.
"Meh, same old. I can never get comfortable on planes." I shrugged.
"How was New York?" he asked.
"Cold but beautiful." I told him.
"You've got more colour in your cheeks and spring in your step." he pointed out.
"How do you know this?" I marvelled.
"Cos I'm your brother. I can read you like a book." he informed me. "So... who or what's put a spring in your step?"
I rolled my eyes. "I can't have any secrets." I joked then went on to tell him all about Josh.
"It's early days so he's not quite my boyfriend."
"But you'd like him to be." he pointed out.
"Oh god yes!" I laughed.
My week at home was spent mostly eating vast quantities of chocolate, cake and brussel sprouts. When I wasn't eating I was chatting with friends and family, cuddling my parents cat and even got in a bit of carol singing at the local pub. I didn't really have time to miss Josh too much but I was excited about our next date. I only sent him a few texts but when I did they were pretty cute.
