I only had a few days left in New York and wanted to spend them all curled up in the warm with Josh and Sweeney but one evening on the way home from work Josh told me we were going out for dinner.
"Put something nice on. We're going out." he told me.
"It's a school night though. I just want to cuddle with you." I sighed.
He wouldn't tell me where we were going. Just out. So I got changed into something a little smarter and reluctantly followed him to a taxi. I tried to be polite cos I didn't want an argument but I was tired.
"No one's going to jump out at you and shout surprise. Don't worry." he smiled weakly and gave my leg a little pat.
"Good. You know I'm not mentally stable enough for surprises." I pointed out.
He laughed a little. "You're fine."
We arrived at a restaurant that I liked because they did really good pasta. It wasn't a particularly fancy restaurant but it was worth changing out of my make up smeared work clothes. The restaurant was usually quite busy but tonight it was barely half full.
After we ordered drinks I looked up from my menu to see Josh smirking about something. I rolled my eyes at him and went back to the menu.
"Try to act normal, dude. We're in public." I teased. "Oh, I forgot you're not normal."
Apart from his smirking Josh was abnormally quiet tonight. Normally he'd be chatting away and making jokes.
I noticed someone from work sat at the next table over. Then I noticed someone from Phantom at another table.
"They say you'll never meet someone you know on the streets of Manhattan but..." I said before I looked around and realised. "Hang on! Hang the f on!"
"Really, I'd never have guessed." Josh said, staring at his menu as he tried not to laugh.
"Are you setting me up for something?" I asked.
"What made you think that?" he laughed.
"Umm, that I now realise I know everyone in this damn restaurant!" I told him.
"Ok guys, she knows." he announced to the rest of the room.
From that everyone started to chat and laugh. Tables were pushed together and I was hugged by so many people. More people kept arriving and I realised I knew more people in New York than I thought.
"Not too much of a surprise is it?" Josh asked and kissed my cheek.
"It's adorable. Was this your idea?" I asked, cupping his cheek and pulling him in for a proper kiss. A few people wolf whistled.
"I wish I could take credit but I only told your friends you needed a send off." he shrugged. "It kind of snowballed."
"Well, thank you anyway." I smiled and gave him another kiss.
It turned out there was an upright piano in the restaurant and of course Josh found it. I smiled and watched as he played along while Tony Danza sang.
"I called it way back in December." Monica told me as she put an arm around my waist.
"What?" I asked.
"I remember when we went bowling the first time I told you he has a crush on you." she smiled.
"It's just a little crush." I joked. "Not at all reciprocated. I'm not madly in love with him at all."
"No, of course not!" she laughed. "I hope you guys invite me to the wedding."
"What?" I laughed.
"I know, it's early days but you just admitted you're madly in love." she shrugged.
"And I would say yes if he asked." I sighed. "Hell, I might even ask him!"
"That's the feminist attitude I like to hear!" she grinned.
I spent the rest of the night chatting, hugging and laughing.
It wasn't until my last night in New York that I let myself cry. We were just making dinner as usual when it all came over me. The sadness of leaving Josh and Sweeney suddenly weighed down on my chest and I could barely more for fear that I'd start crying.
"You ok?" Josh asked, rubbing the small of my back.
That broke the flimsy dam holding back the tears. I didn't say anything, I burrowed into a hug and cried. He tried to get me to look up at him but I refused and buried my face in his neck. Soon his tshirt would be wet with my tears.
"We'll still talk. Phones are amazing these days." he told me with a wobble in his voice.
"But you'll be in LA and I'll be in France." I sniffed. "France is an hour ahead of the uk, LA is god knows how far behind here."
"Oh." he sighed. "We can work something out."
"I hope so." I croaked.
He pulled back a little, just enough to look at me and wipe my tears with his sleeve.
"You've started me off too." he wobbled and wiped his nose on the same sleeve. "God, I'm going to miss you so much."
"I hope that tshirt's going in the wash later." I muttered.
He gave a chuckle and pressed his forehead to mine. "Who's going to make me laugh like that?"
"Oh, you'll find someone funnier." I said.
"Nuh uh." he told me. I felt one of his tears plop onto my cheek. "You have no idea how funny you are."
We hugged, sniffed and kissed our way through dinner. At one point he pulled something out of his food. A long ginger hair! His eyes widened as it kept going.
"Jesus woman! How long is your hair?!" he marvelled.
"Oh my god! I'm so sorry!" I gasped. "You won't miss me shedding my fur all over the place though."
"Neither will my vacuum!" he laughed. "And I thought a dog was bad but a girlfriend sheds even more."
