trinity west
i sigh as i wait for nate to finish talking with the principal. i look at ethan who was leaning against the wall next to me, waiting to get called in by the principal.
"you're dumb." i finally say to break the silence that filled the room. "how am i the dumb one? he's going to be the one that gets in trouble since he threw the first punch, not me." he says as if he knows he's right.
"you're the one that was provoking him." i retort and he snickers. "doesn't matter. he threw the first punch, therefore i was just defending myself."
i mentally facepalm and shake my head, not seeing the point in arguing with him any further. nate walks out of the principals office and glares at ethan before walking out the door, making sure to bump into ethans shoulder before.
"mr. dolan?" my head snaps towards the deep voice of the principal as i stand up to follow nate out and for a split second i can see ethan frown at me before i leave him in the principals hands.
"nate!" i whisper yell due to classes still being in session. he stops walking and turns around, waiting for me to catch up to him. "what did the principal say?" i inquire and he shrugs and we walk down the hall to class together.
"he's not going to decide on consequences until he gets ethan's side of the story and possibly yours since you saw what happened. based on my fucked up face and ethans perfectly fine face, i'm going to guess ethans going to get in more trouble than i am." he laughs as if it's some sort of joke.
"about that," i pause. "are you okay?" i ask in all seriousness and he shakes his head with pursed lips. "i'm sorry that ethan had to-" he quickly cuts me off. "ethan's not the reason."
my eyebrows knit together in confusion. "what do you mean?" nate stops and stares at me, dumbfounded, as if he expected me to know what he was talking about. "you know what, trinity. don't play stupid games."
"i really don't know where you're going with this." i laugh in confusion and nate rubs his mouth in defeat. "all my friends tell me it's so obvious." he lets the sentence hang, making me even more confused than i already was just seconds before.
"it's sucks doesn't it? liking someone you can't have? seeing them everyday but knowing that they'll never be yours. it's the worst feeling cause all you can do is dream and wish for them to be yours, but never truly have them." he simply says and my heart breaks for him.
and just like that, everything started to piece together. like parts of a puzzle piece. oh my god. nate likes me. "nate-"
"i wish i could explain your eyes and how the sound of your voice gives me butterflies. how your smile makes my heart skip a beat and how every time i'm with you i feel so complete." he just barely manages to get out.
"you're you and that's why i love you."
my jaw drops. "you know i love you too but not like that. i'm with ethan. someday, sooner than later, you'll find yourself an amazing girl who'll make you feel like you're on top of the world and you'll love her unconditionally." i grab his hands and rub comforting circles on the back of his palm.
"but that girl is you." his eyes drown in sorrow.
"trust me, it's not. i'm sorry but i don't feel that way about you." it goes quiet and i hear nate sniffle as a tear rolls down his cheek. "you deserve so much better. so much." i wipe away his tear.
i feel so bad.
"hey kids, lets get to class!" we hear a shout that startled us both. i don't take my eyes off of nate until he pulls his hands away from mine and wipes at his own eyes, avoiding all eye contact with me.
nate walks away without saying another word. my hands find their way to my hair as i grasp onto it in frustration.
i look behind me and see the hall monitor watching me and i roll my eyes, adjusting my backpack before i walk to class.

i finish up my assignment in class right as the teacher hands me a note, saying i was needed down at the principals office. i put my binder in my backpack and swing it over my shoulder, walking out of the class.i make my way down to the office just in time to see ethan walking out. he completely ignores me as i push open the door to the main office and smile at the lady behind the desk. she smiles back warmly and gladly takes my slip and informs me to sit down outside the principals office.
i comply and sit down on the chair and just stare at the wall, wanting to get this over with. the door swings open and the principal walks out and says a few quick words to the office lady before he comes back to me and urged me to come into his room.
i sit down on the chair in front of his big desk and he takes a seat on his chair and claps his hands together, scanning me up and down, making me feel very uncomfortable.
"i'm guessing you already know why you are here." he says and i nod my head, looking away from his pedophile-looking face. "i wanted to call you in to get your side of the story, since you witnessed what happened and i hope you will tell me the whole truth so the punishment for both boys will be fair."
he pauses and i look down at my jeans and back up at the principal as he asks me what went down earlier. i tell him the truth, not leaving out any details.
by the time i'm done explaining what happened exactly, the bell for lunch rings and he thanks me and excused me to head to lunch.
i walk out of the office quickly and make my way into the cafeteria, searching for sierra and elijah. as soon as i spot them i walk faster towards them so i could spill all the tea.
i sit down at our usual spot and they look at me in shock when i immediately start telling them what happened.
