Chapter 5

Finally, its the last subject for the first day! I can’t believe I’ve survived this long but at the same time I ponder on ways to tell Jim and Cherry that I had doubts of going to school tomorrow. I’ll upset them but it’s a way to stay alive.

A teacher walks in, all skinny and stiff. Her features are grey and grave making her brief, cold, glare send shivers up my spine. “Good afternoon class. I know its your first day and its expected of you to listen to an orientation on your subjects but since your Physical Education teacher isn’t here,” she scoffs, “you are instructed to get some sweat.” Everyone groans lazily but eventually we all head out wearing the P.E. uniform.

I began running around the track field, alone, minutes ago while the other girls were watching the guys play soccer. ‘Why weren’t they doing as told?’ I look over my shoulder, ‘Its none of your business, Khaleeshia. Keep running.’ So I run hearing my heart beats drum through my ears making me deaf again. My skin sends cool shivers around my body as sweat emerges. June’s scream screeches in my ears- and my ears alone- as I desperately try to block her from my mind. Her fear and sadness gushes through me making me feel sick and afraid despite the sun piercing at me. ‘Run faster Khaleeshia. Run.’ My eyes threaten to close as more cold sweat fall.

I begin another lap, faster now, and surprisingly someone joined in. She’s small about 5’1, blonde, blue-green eyes and over all, pretty. “Slow down, my legs aren’t as long as yours.” She whined, so I did as told. After a few minutes, she giggles. “What’s your name?” she asked in between her short breaths looking a bit worn out.

I dare not look at her ashamed of my exposed scars due to my blue shorts and sleeveless jersey. “Khaleeshia Arya Wilson.” I managed to answer, panting.

In the corner of my eyes, I see her smile gleefully at me. “That’s a really nice name.” she complemented, “My name is Amelia Lara Justice but you can call me Amy or Lara or Melia or Mia or Mel but never call me Justice. It pisses me off.” I nod keeping that last note in mind. Amy it is then.

My eyes then wonder to the other girls who did nothing but scream at the top of their lungs while watching the boys play soccer. “Why aren’t they getting some sweat?” I asked confused as to why they rebelled. Punishments would come for them.

She gave one dry laugh obviously not amused. “They’re all lazy I guess or maybe they don’t want to sweat.” I finished two laps with her when she stopped.

I stopped to wait for her. Her hands clasp on her knees. She’s breathing so hard. “Are you all right?” I asked concerned of what might come next and deeply afraid if it were my fault when I meant no harm to her but only common company.

She looks drenched in her own sweat. “Can we watch the game for a while?” Her head cocks to the field. “I’ve got gallons of sweat on me now. We can run later.”

I look out to where everyone crowded. Great, more people but this is better right? I can have a better social life, according to Cherry. “Sure.” I replied unsurely.

Amy and I walk towards the soccer field and watch the on going game. All of the players are boys and none of them are so good at it. After a few minutes of watching I couldn’t help but ask, “Is this Ace High’s soccer team?”
