Chapter 16

Khaleeshia’s P.O.V.

My eyes scan the page as I feel my hands grip on the book tightly. Is she going to die? No, she can’t! There’s a book two, isn’t there? ‘But it could be about someone else.’ NO! It can’t be. “Khaleeshia, time for bed now.” Cherry called out as she knock on my bed room door. Oh shoot, she found out I’m sneaking in Jim’s book!

I groan quietly whilst slipping in my bookmark into the page I’m in. “Okay.” My eyes widen as I realize I only have a few pages left. ‘How long have I been reading?’ My stomach grumbles. Oh that long. I guess  I skipped dinner. My stomach grumbles again making me look down at it. I sigh thinking I cant last a night with an empty stomach. Oh well, I guess not that I’m not used to it anymore. ‘Used to it’ maybe I need a reminder… ‘No, no, no!” No, I don’t need a new scar. Jim said cutting is bad so I won’t do it. I’ve come this far. I’m not going to fall back, I’m not going to fall back.

I get out of bed with the book in my hands and walk out the door to see Cherry’s weary smile. She was supposed to leave yesterday, I think, but the flight got cancelled so all her planning and packing was a waste.

For some reason, her tired appearance catches me off guard that I start to worry. “Are you all right?” I asked taking in her appearance.

She nods. “I’m good. Are you hungry?” I shake my head, lying. Of course I’m hungry but I don’t want her cooking late at night for me. After I shook my head, my stomach growls defeating the purpose of me, lying. She giggles softly causing my guilt to rise. “Sounds like you are.” I couldn’t help but nod. There’s no use hiding my hunger now. She holds out her hand, “Come. I’ll cook for you.”

I shake my head. “I’ll cook for myself thanks. You should rest, Cherry.” She had a long day spent on waiting for her flight only to find out, after many hours, that she didn’t need to leave for anything. It upset her, of course, but not enough to send rage to the whole house or to Jim. She did that once which, made me fall back from being so close to her but not everyone is perfect. That day, she kept on apologizing like the world would soon swallow her soul and have her suffer in hell but I told her a hundred times over that I understood. I really did actually. Her boss cancelled on her project before he even saw it and he knew how hard she worked for that project. He didn’t even pay her that day! I hate that boss but good thing he’s got nothing on Cherry now. She’s working under someone else who is less likely to have her rage twenty-four seven.

Cherry gives me the ‘aw, you’re so sweet’ face before hugging me and taking my hand. “I want to cook for you, Princess, and don’t worry I’m taking a break tomorrow. My boss told me that I need it anyway.” She smiled. It’s obvious that she likes her new boss, Hannah Sparks. But still, Cherry wants to work on her own but with the little experience at hand- little according to Cherry’s standards- she doesn’t have the confidence to go solo. I nod and walk into the kitchen, bringing the book with me.

We reach the kitchen and switch on the lights. I set the table for myself as she takes out the frozen left over from the dinner I missed. After I set the table, I sit myself on the bar stool across her. She looks down at my hands. “You seem so hooked up with that book.” She said, nodding to Jim’s work.

I nod enthusiastically, “I love the story and the philosophy behind it.” My hands clench on the book as I hold on to it for dear life. “Its my favorite book.”

Her eyes grow wide as I said it. Maybe she’s happy that I like it. She gazes at me for what seems to be for a life time making me a little more concerned till she said, “You were smiling, Princess.” Again, happiness passed by me without a say.
