Chapter 11

Amy’s P.O.V.

I run to the door before Xzavier or Khaleeshia can keep me behind. There’s no way I’m throwing this opportunity out of the window now that Ameerah isn’t here.

My hoodie goes up as I jog to her house, which isn’t so far from mine. Hesitantly, I knock on her door wanting to know how she’s doing yet not really wanting to see her current condition. Damn it, this is difficult. Crystal opens the door. “Good evening Amy.” Said Crystal as she opened the door wider for me to enter. “Come in, come in.” I walk inside immediately feeling a wave of warmth gush through me. “Tina, Amy is here!” The house is pretty small so Crystal needed not to shout so loud.

I walk inside a warm room looking around for her. There she is. “Hey mum.” My lips curve up trying to show her I was at least happy about earlier today.

“Amy!” Her hand extends to me shakily. I take her hand immediately seeing she found it difficult to raise it at me with her condition. “How are you, baby?”

I chuckle rolling my eyes as she called me ‘baby.’ “I’m fine, mum.” Honestly, I was till I saw her getting weaker. “Am I always going to be the baby?” I asked trying to lighten up the mood. She nods smiling weakly at me as I stroke her hair. Silence comes through us as we look into each other’s eyes just cherishing what could be the last. After a few minutes, I kiss her forehead noting the time as I looked to her clock. “Why are you still awake? Its almost morning. You need rest.” I said tucking her.

She chuckles “Can I ask you the same thing? You need rest as well, Amy. Don’t you have school tomorrow?” her eyes shooting concern at me.

I roll my eyes at her. “I had a sleepover and Khaleeshia finally came but I got a little too drunk to realize she was getting bored.” My head hangs down in defeat, “I’m such a lousy friend.” I said looking down, remembering Khaleeshia’s frowns.

Tina, my mum, raises my chin so our eyes would meet. “Its all right, baby Amy, she’s just difficult to please that’s all. Someday, she’ll realize what a good person you are.” Her voice was so sure and so solid that I had to believe her, I just had to. Suddenly, her eyes grow weak as her hand falls gently on the blanket. “How is your sister?”

I hate this, talking about Ameerah with my mother. I know that I’d hurt her by telling anything about Ameerah or even say my sister’s name but she asked. “She’s doing fine and she’s being a good big sister.” My words weren’t lies, Ameerah is a good sister. She knew when to call something quits and she knew when to let go.

Tina nods looking slightly abashed. “I wish I could be there for both of you.”

I hold her hand tightly forcing her to look at me. “You were but now I’m here for you.” She didn’t look convinced by my words. “Everything got complicated that’s all.” I said, shrugging as if it weren’t a big thing. Kneeling down at her side and looking at her solemn expression made my heart sink. “Please mother,” I said looking at her pleadingly, “I beg of you please, Ameerah will come.”

Her eyes shoot up looking at me surprised. “No, Amy. Don’t tell her.”

“Why?” I asked looking at her sadly. “Ameerah would hate me for not telling her what you’re going through now.” Ameerah would kill me! “Please, mum.”
