I took Choi Nabi home as soon as father left. I didn't understand why he was acting so weird around this girl. Could he have had a past with her mother?
"This is me," Nabi points to a small, cozy looking home with flowers growing at the front.
I slow the car down then eventually stopped.
Nabi takes her seatbelt off, grabs the handle of her bag, then reaches for the door, "I'll see you tomorrow."
"Yeah," I give her a nod.
She hops out then disappears into her home.
I start indicating to get back onto the road then looked at my rearview mirror. A black, tinted car parks right behind me. It looked oddly familiar. For some reason I wanted to wait for whoever was inside to come out. And sure enough, my suspicions were correct. A woman, if I could even call her that, comes out of the car. She was wearing a pink floral dress with a cropped black leather jacket. I could only just see the red crescent moon sewn into her jacket when she makes her way to the passenger seat, takes out a couple of grocery bags, then closes the door. She then makes her way into the house Nabi had just got into. I have to go see father, I thought.
-
Father was nowhere to be seen at the Moon institute. I looked at every corner on every floor, but yet, nothing. The only place I could think of now was grandfathers' office.
He was surprised to see me when I showed up at his door. I hardly ever visited him.
"Sup gramps," I smiled as I made my way to the sofa just in front of his desk.
He stands up from his chair and sits across from me on the other sofa. "What brings you here my boy?"
"I'm looking for father, has he been in here?"
Grandpa puts a leg over the other and leans back comfortably, "I haven't seen him since this morning."
I must've looked disappointed because next he asked if something was wrong. "I just wanted to know about a person. What was her name again?" I scratched my head and thought for a minute. "Choi? Choi Sun?"
Grandpa sits up properly.
"There's this new girl in my class and her name is Choi Nabi. Father came by my apartment today to pick up the assignment he gave me last week but he got distracted when he saw her. He was all weird and just..." I shivered. "I don't know, something was just off I guess."
"Off as in?" Grandpa was beginning to look serious.
"Choi Nabi told father that Choi Sun was her mother. He then asked her how she was and well, Nabi said she died. Father looked sick after hearing that and he kinda just walked out without saying anything else."
Grandpa sighs.
"Who is she? Choi Sun?" I asked curiously.
"She was a former Moon Mafia. She became your father's bodyguard at some point and well, they fell in love."
It made sense why my father was so upset. But it didn't at the same time. He has my mother after all.
"She took off one day with no goodbye or even an explanation. We never saw her since." Grandfather stands back up then comes over and sits with me. "Can I ask you for a favour?"
I nod. "Anything."
"Keep this girl insight at all times. Befriend her. Try get information as to why her mother left us. We were worried her disappearance would effect the clan, but thank God nothing did. Your father was so heart broken when she left, so if you could find something about her to ease his mind a little, that would be good." Grandpa pats my back.
I nodded in understanding, "yeah, whatever you say gramps." I stand up to leave but then remembered, "oh by the way, I dropped the girl off at her house and then after a while, one of the Moon Clan's cars parked behind me. A lady with a pink dress got out and she was wearing the clan's jacket."
"A pink dress?" He laughs. "Ahh, of course. That lady you saw is Kang Aera, also known as Kitty here at the institute. She and Choi Sun were very close. It's not a surprise that her daughter is living with her."
"You know all your employees well," I chuckle.
"Of course," he stands up too. "We're like family around here. Remember that."
You remind me every time I see you, gramps.
"Anyway, I'm sorry to kick you out but I was sort of in the middle of something," he chuckles lightly.
"Oops, sorry. I'll head off." With that I was out of there. I went back to my apartment immediately then hopped back onto my laptop. I went onto the Moon Clan's folder that grandpa granted me access to when I turned sixteen.
He thought it was best for the successor of the clan to start learning the ropes at a young age. Everything I needed to know to run the business and the clan was basically was in this folder. It also had the information of former and current clan members.
I typed 'Choi Sun' into the search bar. Her file was one of the smaller ones and consisted mostly of pictures. The first thing I opened was her profile. It had the basic stuff like her full name, family, date of birth, place of birth and so on. It said there that her twin brother Choi Seungcheol is currently in the Moon Clan. Just like her brother, she was a member of the youth unit and was also a fighter. She studied law at Korea University. She's only been on few missions, one of them being an attempt to assassin my father by Jeon Industries.
"Jeon Industries?" I whispered to myself. "I'll have to ask uncle Wonwoo about this..."
After I finished reading through her profile I then looked through all at the pictures. I was stunned at how much she and her daughter looked alike. They could have been the same person. The only thing that was different about them was the vibe they each gave off. Though I was only looking at pictures, Choi Sun looked like she was a confident girl. The pictures themselves gave off attitude. Did that make sense? Choi Nabi seemed not like that.
One of the pictures was of three girls. Choi Sun on the left, a girl I had never seen before in the middle, and a girl with an over-sized hoodie on the right. I recognised her immediately as the lady with the floral dress I saw earlier.
The last couple of pictures in the file were of my father and Choi Sun. It was taken at our family mansion. They were dressed formally. My father in a tuxedo and Choi Sun in a dress. One was of him looking the happiest, I don't think I had ever seen him smile like that. The other picture was of my father kissing the top of Choi Sun's head. It made me feel jealous for my mother.
"Don't worry father, I'll find out the reason behind her disappearance," I stared at his smiling face on my screen. I'm going to prove to him that her sudden runaway was nothing to get sad over after all these years. He'll forget about her and finally give my mother the love that she deserves.
