"You did what?!" Father shouts at me from across the dining table. He stands up abruptly, causing his chair to fall backwards behind him.
"H-honey," my mother says shakily. "Calm down. It's okay..."
He looks down at her angrily. "Did you not hear that your son just said?! He's just gone and told a random girl that she's my daughter!"
Mother looks away, "but she is your daughter..." she says faintly.
I gripped the utensils in my hands.
"What?" Food was flying out of father's mouth as he yelled down at my mother. He was practically spitting at her. "Jungyeon, do you realise what your son has just done? He's put that poor girl in so much danger just by saying that she's my daughter! Even if she is, why would you do that, hm?!" He shouts back at me. "Are you asking for her get killed?!"
What if I am...
Mother gets up abruptly, tears streaming down her face. "She's all you've cared about all these years! That..." Mother eyes the floor as if she dropped the words she wanted to say. "That bitch!"
Father was now fuming. "Don't you ever!" His palm makes contact with her cheek.
I flinch as if I was the one that got hit.
"Don't you ever..." his voice had lowered, "speak about Choi Sun that way, Jungyeon." He picks up his plate of food and throws it at the wall. He then stares at me in the eyes for another two seconds before leaving the room.
I waited for mother to stop sobbing then finally decided to stand up. I go over to her numbed body and hugged her.
It was always like this at home. Father was always abusive and mother just took it all.
I didn't understand why she didn't want to leave him. It's not like she had to money of her own. She did heir her step father's company after all.
"Junior go to your room. I'll get the maids to clean this up." She untangles herself from me and leaves through the same door father left from.
I sighed, suddenly feeling guilty. This time round it was my fault my mother got hit. Not because she spent too much on clothes. Not because she tripped and broke something expensive. Not because father was drunk. It was all purely my fault.
I made my way to my room without acknowledging the butlers and maids like I always did. I hardly came and visited the family mansion but when I did, the workers were always happy to see me. I moved out when I turned sixteen since father wanted me to focus on school and also be close to my grandparents since I'll be the next heir.
Father had decided a long time ago that he didn't want to take over the business. Which is why I had to stay close to my grandfather so he could teach me.
My grandparents moved out of the family mansion too and into one of the apartments in my building. The top half of that building was in fact the Moon Mafia clan's base.
As soon as I was in my room, I lazily flop onto the couch and turned on the tv but put it on mute. I then reached for my laptop which was sitting on the coffee table. I opened the lid and waited for the face recognition before it unlocks itself. It immediately opens the last tab I was on which was my gallery. There was only three videos displayed. I clicked on the first one called Uncle Wonwoo's interview.
"What can you tell me about Choi Sun and my father's relationship?" I heard myself say. I was not in the shot as I was behind the camera. It was just Uncle Wonwoo sitting at his office desk.
Uncle Wonwoo laughs. "What are you up to kid?"
"Nothing, I just wanted to know about this girl Choi Sun. I'm... trying to do some research on her disappearance. It's my father's new assignment for me." Half of it was somewhat true. And the other half was just a pure lie.
Uncle Wonwoo nods, "okay. I see." He puts his pen down and leans back on his chair. "Well, the first time I met Sunny was at..." He chuckles. "Did you know your mother and I were married?"
At the time I was in complete shock. My mouth hung open and I didn't know what to say so I just shook my head.
This causes uncle to laugh even more. "Back in high school your mother and I were arranged to get married. We eventually did and your father was so heart broken he left South Korea for over a year. He came back one and day and boom! There she was. Choi Sun and your father shows up at Jungyeon and I's doorstep claiming that this girl was his girlfriend. It was unbelievable at the time because your father loved your mother." The way he was talking about my parents was kind of hurting me.
What changed father? Did this Choi Sun poison your love for mother then left you to rot of sadness? What an evil witch...
"He loved her so much it was envying to watch sometimes." He looked a little pained but kept a small smile on his face. "Anyway, back to Choi Sun. I didn't see them that often but when I did, your father looked at her the way he did your mother. Maybe loved her even more..." He shifts a little.
"How would you know that?" I asked a little offended.
He looks over the camera and at me apologetically. "He's my best friend, kid. I just knew."
I nod and gestured for him to continue.
"Everything was going good for a while until this traumatic event happened which involved your father, your mother, Choi Sun, me, a bunch of our friends and Moon Mafia's. The youth unit, to be exact."
"What happened?"
He shakes his head. "That, I can't tell you kid. Sorry."
I sighed but understood his situation. Uncle Wonwoo was not a part of the mafias but he did vow to keep us a secret for some unknown reason. I guess he badly got tangled up in all this some how.
"A few weeks after the event, Choi Sun took off and was never seen again."
"That's it?" I asked a little disappointed.
"That's it."
Then I'll have to find out about this 'traumatic event.' I clicked out of the video then played the next one. Hacker Lee's Interview.
