Nabi
My head was pounding. My throat was dry. My body feels like it was hit by a truck ten times and then sewn back together. I sit up and clutch my head. My eyes press themselves shut. It hurt to even move.
"You know you didn't have to party that hard." A voice calls from outside my room. The door was wide open but I couldn't see who it was.
I don't say anything.
After a minute Joshua comes in with a tray of soup and water. He places it on my bed side table then sits on the edge of my bed. "You should have the soup while it's hot."
"Yeah, in a bit. I just have to get used to sitting up first." I wanted to throw up but my body was not reacting. "So, what happened last night? Is Junhui okay?"
Joshua tilts his head from side to side like a seesaw. "You and Jeonghan got cosy." He laughs.
My eyes widen. "What?!"
He laughs even louder. "Don't worry. Nothing happened. I watched you the whole time. Your brother on the other hand," he pauses, "well, he was off his face."
"Is he okay?" I ask again.
"He's fine I dropped you both off home. He attempted to drink and drive with you in the passenger seat."
I was disappointed. Never would I have thought he would try something so stupid. Even if he was drunk, Junhui would never even think of doing something so reckless.
"The thing is..." Joshua's tone was now serious. "I think my theory on him is right."
My heart slows. "How do you know?"
He starts fidgeting with his fingers. "How much do you remember from last night?"
I shrug. "When I had a few drinks downstairs I was pretty much out of it by then. I'm a lightweight..."
He chuckles and pounds on his chest twice. "It's in the genes."
That makes me smile.
"Anyway, when Jeonghan found us and brought us upstairs that's when we lost Junhui. You sat with Jeonghan on the couch-" he smiles cheekily.
I just roll my eyes.
"-he offered you drinks and it looked like you were having fun."
"Stop teasing," I whined.
"And then," he continues, "Junhui found us. He was a mess by the way. I sat him down on the other couch and asked if he wanted water. He said yes so I pretended to leave."
"And then?" I was trying hard to concentrate on Joshua's words but I was seriously having head issues at this point.
"I watched you get up and sit next to him. You whispered something which made him get a little jumpy. Do you remember what it was?" He asks.
I close my eyes and shake my head. "No. I won't try to remember either, I feel too sick right now."
Joshua sighs. "Have the damn soup, Nabi."
"In a minute, just wait." I said with a tinge of annoyance. "So going back to your theory..."
"Right. First of all, Junhui has never showed interest in girls. But when you showed up, he was suddenly at your side all the time. I thought this was a bit... out of character. But then I thought, hmm maybe he's found someone he actually likes. But then he confirmed your brother and sister relationship. So then I thought, yeah okay, this makes sense. Except-" he pauses because he was talking so fast. He talks slower now, "except it doesn't. Who acts the way Junhui does when they find out they have a long lost sister? Why hasn't he introduced you to your own dad?"
I was starting to get lost. Joshua actually talks a lot more than I thought. Is he ever going to get to the point?
"Before the party when we came to pick you up, I told Junhui that I like you. You know what he said? He said I couldn't date you because you're his sister. Now," he sounded so excited for some reason. "That's not Junhui at all. I'm the only guy he knows and trusts. Were best friend's for goodness sakes!"
"Right." I wasn't catching on.
"At the party, he didn't look bothered that you getting closer with Jeonghan. In fact, he couldn't care less that you were with some boy you just met. Not to mention you were drunk."
"Mhmm..." Get to the point, please!
"I think he knows, Choi Nabi. I think he's known for a while."
I open my eyes now.
"He doesn't show that he cares about you no matter what his mouth says. To be honest, he's been a liar all his life and I've chosen to ignore it." Joshua shift uncomfortably. "If he really believed that you were his sister, he would've beaten Jeonghan to a pulp last night. He's protective, especially when it comes to family. Very, protective. If he really believed that you are his sister, he wouldn't have stopped me from trying to date you because I'm the person he trusts the most. And why did he stop me from dating you? Because he knows that I'm your brother, Nabi."
I suddenly felt betrayed. "So what you're saying is he's been pretending all this time. But why would he do that?"
He shakes his head. "I don't know either. But being born into a family of murderers can and will really fuck you up."
The more I got involved with Joshua and Junhui, the more I questioned my mother's true identity. It seemed as if she was involved in something more than a love triangle.
"Were not going to say anything to Junhui." I made up my mind.
"Are you crazy? Why not? This is not child play."
"It seems as if Junhui's already been playing a game. We have to find out his intentions. I thought I was toying with his feelings this whole time, but no, it was the other way around."
"You want revenge?" Joshua couldn't believe what I was saying, and neither could I.
"I want answers." I suddenly felt bitter towards Junhui.
"And how exactly are you going to get them?"
That's when I smiled for the first time. "Can you hook me up with some black clothes and red lipstick?"
