16-Rules and jobs

Axel was the best.He had made me and Riley baths and had even given us some new clothes.Sure they weren't completely clean but anything was better then what we were wearing.

He had picked out a camo pattern shirt and black jeans for me.I threw on a blue hoodie
I found and walked back to our room.
Inside Riley was sitting on the bed looking at something. "What's that?"

" It looks like a sketch book. "Riley said flipping through the pages. All the pages were covered in drawings.Near the end of the sketch book was an out line of a drawing that wasn't finished." guess they never got a chance to finish the picture. "I said sadly.

Knock,knock." You guys dressed? "A voice said from outside the door.

" Yep! "Riley said not taking her eyes off the sketch book.Axel popped his head in." Lila said that if you guys wanted I could give you a tour of the place. "

Riley closed the sketch book and placed it down beside of her. "Sound good."

Axel stared at the sketch book for a few seconds.I swear I saw his eyes get darker.
"Well let's go he said and took off,Me and Riley following him.

" so these are the houses that people stay and live in. "Axel said gesturing to the row of houses that were on the street.There weren't many,just four.

A few steps later we arrived at a small shed at the corner of the run down street.

"That over there is the supply shed. When we find or receive supplies we put them in there."
We continued walking until we meet cross roads. "This place is the center,we meet here everyday ,it's were we eat lunch,throw parties,or just hang out."
On the left side of the center was the hospital.

"This place is the hospital,but you already know that." Axel said rubbing his head.
"I'm sorry about your friend."

" She'll be fine. "Riley said in a monotone voice.Axel looked confused"How do you know that?" " she's allison , the day she dies is the day that the sky stops being blue. "I said"she screamed that at a zombie when it tried to rip her face off."

Axel shrugged and continued walking.

We came to a huge house,bigger then all the other ones. "That is the council hall. Where all the leaders get together and make the rules and other decision stuff."

Riley looked curious "All the leaders?"

" Yeah,every job has one person has leader and that person is on the council.Then there's the leader of all of them.That's Lila. "

"You have jobs here." I asked curiously

Axel nodded "yep.There's builders,gardeners,hunters,medics,
messangers,scavengers,and cooks. Every person has a job and some have more."

I nodded slowly understanding. "What are you?"

" I'm a builder and a cook. "
That surprised me.Those are very different things.

"How do you get the job?" Riley asked

"You try it and if your good,then you get the job.Simple."

'what job do I want?'I wondered.'I'm good at hunting and I like exploring and scavenging. '

"Axel,Riley,Kirsten!" We heard Lila's voice and saw her coming out of the council hall with Jordan. "Hey guys,i see that axel is giving you the tour."

I nodded"yeah it looks nice so far. He also explained the jobs. "

Lila smiled "Nice all that's left are the rules."
She turned to axel and jordan"I got this guys,you can go now. "

Axel and jordan walked off after saying bye.
Me and Riley turned our attention towards Lila.
"Alright let's go over some boring rules.
Number one -Do not eat or take more food then you need.Same goes for other supplies,we share evenly.
Number two -Do not start a fight with anybody.I don't want to have to clean up blood off the road.
Number three -Do not leave the fence without telling anyone or going without someone.I don't want to lose people.
Number four -If you think you are infected , tell one of the council members immediately.We'll take you to the changing room."

I scrunched my eyebrows together
" two questions.What's the changing room? "
Lila point off to were trees were surrounding a small building. "Its were we bring people that might have the virus.We watch them and if they turn we put them out of their misery."

I nodded"okay and second,what made you build that room and make that rule? "

Lila hesitated on that question. "There was a boy named Christian in our group.He was a scavenger.We think that while he was out he got the virus,but he didn't tell anyone."
She stopped for a second. "He turned.He attacked people.Killed them.We didn't want that to happen again so we built the room.
If we find something peculiar about you, we can send you there.Leave you there for two days.If you haven't turned then you go free."

Me and Riley looked at each other.We hadn't lost people before.Since the beginning of had been me,Riley,and ally.

Lila looked up at us and smiled"alright I think it's time you guys head to bed.You can try out the jobs in the morning and meet the rest of the people here. "

Me and Riley nodded.Has we headed back i couldn't help but look back over to the changing room.Beside it I could make out what looked like wooden crosses.Graves.

I sighed "I call the bed."
Riley smirked"whatever. "
