Ginny stood waiting with the other first years in the Great Hall. She was about to be sorted, which was probably the most nerve wracking thing today. She had sat with Fred and George on the train ride - so much for learning to be social. She didn't see anyone she knew on the way in, but there were a lot of people. She was watching the sorting now, trying to spot anyone that looked friendly."Lovegood, Luna!"
Ginny gasped. It was the girl from the woods! She was a witch! She was named Luna, apparently. In all the time they spent together, neither had said their name, and neither of them had brought up magic, although Luna talked of creatures that didn't exist, and mermaids. Luna particularly liked mermaids. Ginny wondered why that was.
"RAVENCLAW!"
Well that was a shame. Ginny knew she wouldn't be in Ravenclaw. She just wasn't smart enough.
She had a while to wait until it was her turn. She searched the Gryffindor table for her brothers, and found them sitting with their friends. Harry and Ron weren't there. That was weird.
"Weasley, Ginevra!"
Ginny gulped and stepped up to the stool. The Sorting Hat was dropped on her head and Ginny held her breath.
"Why hello there. The final Weasley. I have been wanting to meet you."
Ginny fiddled with her fingers. Please just sort me with my brothers.
"Don't like being the center of attention, do we? That's alright. I know just where to put you."
"GRYFFINDOR!"
Ginny sighed in relief and hurried to sit with Fred and George, who were cheering louder than anyone else.
"Where are Ron and Harry?" Ginny asked.
"We don't know," Fred said.
"They weren't on the train," George continued.
Ginny paled.
"Oh, relax, they'll show up," Fred reassured her.
"This isn't the first time someone's missed the train," George added.
"Someone will get them here safe and sound," Fred said.
Ginny nodded and watched the rest of the Sorting. She didn't recognize anyone besides for Luna.
Ron and Harry didn't show up during the feast. Ginny was growing more and more nervous by the minute, and was really hoping that the people in her dorm were nice, and that people liked her, and that -
"Hello, Ginevra."
Ginny jumped at the sound of someone's voice in her ear. Thankfully, it was Luna, in her new Ravenclaw robes.
"Would you like to go for a walk?"
"A walk? Don't we have to go up to ours dorms?"
Luna smiled mischievously. "No. I have permission to bring you outside."
Ginny looked around. "Outside? Permission from who?"
"Come with me."
Ginny bit her lip. She didn't want to get in trouble her first night at Hogwarts, but she had no reason to believe that Luna was lying to her.
"Alright."
Ginny stood and followed Luna from the Great Hall. They walked down the halls and out the main doors.
Ginny took a deep breath of night air. "Are you sure we're allowed to be doing this?"
"Of course. Professor Dumbledore knows of our condition."
