The Town of Soft Rains

Prompt: A soft breeze stirs a leaf that has fallen on the pavement. Otherwise, the street is tidy and beautifully maintained, just like the quiet houses arranged in neat rows along its sides. Just like the vacant shopfronts along quaint Main Street nearby. Just like the silent playground. Where is everyone?

Story:

My feet took me to the playground, it was silent still. The moonlight illuminated the path walk as I dragged my every step to stir the unbearable silence, dirt getting caught in between my toes, the cold wind slightly pushing the swings. At least there's a little more sound now, yet I could still hear a pin drop if I ever had one to throw.

Leaves like pencil shavings started falling together with the breathy wind, it helped "unquiet" the town, just what I needed – more sound, but I could never get enough of it though.

It's been seven weeks, no humans yet in sight. At this rate I'll run out of food next year, unless I get sick of eating spam for every meal or I learn how to grow my own food, only then eating will be the least of my problems. But my question is, do I really want to live that long?

I still don't know if there are still humans running about, or maybe thrashing some grocery store somewhere on the other side of the planet. Just someone would do, maybe they'll make me want to live longer.

If only they lived.

I hope someone survived other than me.

I've never gone out of town before, mama said to not go outside alone, especially at dark.

"I'm sorry mama." I said to no one.

I didn't knew being alone would be this hard, my mind always plays tricks on me and I keep falling for them.

It's been seven weeks since I last saw any living breathing thing. I've been hiding like I was told to, but I don't know how long I could keep doing this.

I hope the demons don't come back. I don't know what I'd do if they find out that they're missing one. They'll probably look for me. I just wish I knew how to fight like my brother did. I miss them.

As I turned to the corner away from the playground, I heard a shuffling, then I saw quick bright flashing lights right before my eyes and I've never felt so light in my life.

I knew what was happening.

Why didn't I listen to mama?
