Kay:
We sat in utter silence. The bustle of the café was comfort because I didn’t know what to say. Ben gently took a sip of his coffee and cleared his throat for what I believed to be the fifth time before sighing and looking out the window.
“Ready to order?” That was probably the seventh time the waitress had come to our table, she jiggled slightly in her tiny waitress outfit trying to catch Ben’s attention. He smiled at her kindly but didn’t say a word.
“No we’re fine.” I said a little too aggressively. I ran my hand through my hair and sighed.
“Really? I can get you another coffee or some cake…” She smiled, leaning more towards Ben’s direction.
“I said we’re good.” I said, she glared at me like bitchy tone I was giving out to her. God. Can’t she take a hint? Ben bemused took the final sip of his coffee, the waitress eyed it like it was the golden opportunity.
“Top up?” She asked keenly, sticking her chest out as she reached down. Ben shook his head.
“Ben…” I muttered.
“You sure? It’s on me if-“ She continued, positioning herself so that her back was facing me.
“Oh for fucks sake. I’m pregnant.” I blurted out without thinking. My heart skipped a beat but it was like nothing changed, the bustle of the café was as loud as before. The only difference is that Ben was now gently moving the waitress out of the way ushering her a little too forcefully to stare at me. I could see the calculation in his face and I just waited. He was probably wondering if it was his…
But it couldn’t be…
We didn’t even take notice as the waitress left us. I expected Ben to ask me who it was but he didn’t. He only sat and my heart raced, I wanted him to say something, anything.
Ben only stared at me with an all knowing look. A look that almost embarrassed me and my mind almost spoke its own words of love for J-
“Kay…” Ben entwined his fingers together placing his elbows on the table, this hunched position was a serious one and the intense gaze in Ben’s eyes gave me chills. I blinked away the tears and panic from my eyes. “My beloved Kay…” He mumbled, only audible for me to hear. “I’m going to take you home now.” I opened my mouth to question him but something stopped me, there was more calculation on his face it was almost as if he was planning something.
The walk towards his bike was silent, he wrapped his arm around my waist and pulled me close at his bike, the sudden embrace caught me off guard but I felt myself melt into his arms and pull him even closer.
“You’re full of trouble.” He commented stroking my hair, I only nodded admitting the dire truth. I was trouble, I was screwed… How he was taking this so calmly I probably would never understand how.
Silently and automatically we got onto his bike and travelled home.
Vincent:
I pulled into my driveway to see Jase pacing on Kay’s doorstep; he saw my car pull up and smiled waving me over. I took a deep breath and contemplated what should I do…should I tell Jase? Do I find Kay… should I confront her?
“Hey Vince buddy! I’ve decided. I’m going to ask Kay out. I’m just…I’m just going to man up.” He clapped his hands nervously.
“Kay’s pregnant.” I said, oh my god. What in the world was that? I was just going to tell him that I think something’s wrong with Kay. Why did that come out instead? Oh my god. I kicked myself mentally. This just went horribly wrong. Jase just stared at me and then I clenched my fist as I heard the sounds of a motorbike.
