"Hey cutie. Are you free?"
He calls me at work. Even though I told him not to. I clutch my phone to my ear, my shoulders shaking.
"No, I'm busy right now."
"Work?"
"Yes. I thought I told you." I grit my teeth. The words escape through small spaces.
Annoyance shows in my voice. My pen taps upon the desk.
"Sorry, I just miss you so much it hurts."
Tap, tap, tap, tap.
I hesitate to say so. A pause before answering. "I miss you too."
My voice is clipped, rubbing sandpaper together. Or over my nerves, rather, making them raw and irritated.
"But you don't sound like it."
Tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap.
"Jeffery, I'm in the middle of work right now. I'm sorry if I sound annoyed."
"Oh, okay…"
Tap, tap, tap…
"Love you."
A box of silence. "… Love you too."
"Bye."
A square of relief. "Bye."
