“How are you doing?” The sound of shuffling plastic and the beeping of the scanner echoes in the empty store.
“I’ve been doing okay.” I sigh.
“What’s up today?” He notices my sigh. Oh crap. He looks up and his sky blue eyes soften.
“I um… met someone I hadn’t seen in a while…"
“And love that person, don’t you."
“Wha…??” I nearly jump out of my skin. Tom continues to scan the items and then begins to tap at the cash register. Calmly.
“I can see it."
“You can… see it?"
“It’s in the way you carried yourself. The atmosphere of your being."
“The atmosphere?"
“I knew it as soon as you walked in."
I drop my eyes to my hands and intertwine my fingers. And feel my cheeks redden. I nod slowly in response.
Tom smiles. “I knew it."
“Hey, don’t tease me!” I press my cheeks in a pout. Then we both pause, and burst into laughter.
