I pay the bill, despite protests from Ichi. A look of "I have more money than you do” sends him slinking back.

“Thank you! Have a nice night!” He shouts as we leave the shop with a jangle of bells. We are nearly one of the last few customers to set foot outside the place. For some odd reason, this coffee shop closes its doors at an early hour.

The rain is at a standstill.

Water puddles greet our feet. I step into one, ripples spreading. I stop to glance at my reflection. My face quivers in the shivering water.

He carries his jacket over his arm, the umbrella in his other hand.

I take a deep breath and exhale. Air after a rain tastes wonderful.

“So refreshing.” I feel better all of a sudden.

“It is.” He agrees. Huh, that’s interesting. He usually has some witty remark to add at the end of my words. I peer into his face.

“Ichi?”

He jolts as if electrocuted. “Yes?”

“Are you okay?”

“Oh, I’m fine.” He cracks a small smile.

Really now…

Our footfalls are deadened by the damp sidewalk, the occasional splash of water echoing around our feet.
