I'd set my alarm 15 minutes earlier this morning than I had the previous day. I wanted to be able to knock on Jason's door before he got to mine, kind of to return the favor. I dressed myself in a pair of black mom jeans and tucked a black, short-sleeved T-shirt into them. I realized while doing so that I'd have to do laundry soon and I had no idea where to go to do so. I did my usual makeup, being careful not to smudge my eyeliner, then plaited my hair into two French braids.
I slipped on my shoes and grabbed my Butlins jacket that I had hung on the back of the door. I slipped my keys, purse and phone into the pockets then left my room, heading down to Jason's. I lifted my fist to knock on the door but paused for a moment. Why was I nervous to do this? It was Jason! I let out a breath of air then forced myself to knock on his door. A few moments passed before the door swung open to reveal a wet-haired Jason, once again dressed head to toe in black.
I instantly looked up to his face, and he wore a shocked expression which soon turned into a lazy smile.
"Hey." He ran a hand through his wet hair.
"Hi." Why couldn't I stop smiling back?
"I see the tables have turned, now I get my own personal wake up call." Jason stepped towards me and shut his door behind him.
"Yeah well, I just couldn't handle not seeing you for another 10 minutes." I joked back in a friendly tone. Why was this true though?
"Don't make me blush!" Jason fanned himself, joking back to me and I mentally thanked God that he took it as a joke.
By this point, we were walking down the stairs to the ground floor and about to reach the canteen doors.
"I hope you're excited to be on bumper cars with me today." Jason bumped my hip and I nearly went flying into the canteen door.
I spun around "Oi!"
He was roaring with laughter. "It wasn't that funny!" I whined when he started slapping his leg, laughing more.
I rolled my eyes and turned around, walking into the canteen alone, picking up a tray and working my way down the line of cereal, not forgetting my morning coffee.
I sat down on the table, Jenny and Tommy were already there next to each other, so I sat on the opposite side. Seconds later Jason joined us and sat down next to me, also with a bowl of cereal and coffee on his tray.
Jenny and I started conversing about how our first day went, while the boys began their own conversation. We all paused when seeing Luke and Emily walk in together. I gave Jason a look, then we all went back to talking when they came over to seem inconspicuous. They must have made up. I didn't even feel disappointed after having spent a day with him yesterday, he was a good-looking guy but his personality was so flat in comparison to, well, Jason.
"Morning all." I looked up to smile at Luke, but he didn't even spare me a glance.
I frowned. That was strange, I'd thought we'd gotten on pretty well yesterday, even just as friends. I chanced a look at Emily, who to my surprise, was staring straight at me. I noticed her gaze was darting between me and Luke. Oh.
It became clear to me somebody must have asked Luke not to speak to me. I shook my head, how pathetic.
My eyes darted in at Emily, and as I held her eye contact and said, "By the way, Luke, I just wanted to say thank you so much for yesterday." Emily's eyes darted to his in an accusative way. I turned my line of vision to him. "I had the best first shift ever with you, thanks for teaching me everything! Can't wait to work with you again!" I gave him a sickly-sweet smile, then picked my tray up and walked away. I felt Jason catch up to me.
"You're really that bothered over Luke, huh?" Jason's voice came from behind me and when I turned to face him his reaction made my heart drop. His eyes were piercing into mine, but his face looked so sad.
"No! No, I mean, no!" I panicked.
He walked ahead of me and put his tray in the rack.
"It's just Emily, I was trying to piss her off, she's been giving me the daggers since I got here." I almost jogged to keep up with him.
Jason stopped as we hit the exit and we made contact with the fairground "She's jealous of you, you know."
"Jealous of me? No. She's jealous that Luke's talking to any other existing female apart from her." I followed him over to the bumper cars.
"You're right, to be fair your nothing special." My mouth hung open in shock. Did he really just say that?
Jason slowly turned around, a huge grin plastered to his face and he let out a cheeky laugh.
"I'm joking, Lottie!" he tried to playfully wrap his arms around me but I wasn't having any of it, I turned in the opposite direction.
"Babe, I was joking!" I stopped in surprise and he took the opportunity to wrap his arms around me.
I faced him and raised a single eyebrow "Did you just call me babe?"
"Err, well, yeah, I kinda-"
"After you just said I was nothing special?" I raised the opposing eyebrow at him.
"I'll make it up to you?" Jason's voice went a pitch higher, as if he was scared of me.
"Obviously!" I removed myself from his embrace and stepped into the bumper car staff area, which resembled a posh shed.
The rest of the shift was spent with me and Jason bantering back and forth, as well as him actually telling me what I needed to do. Today we actually did go to the canteen for lunch, Luke acted pretty much the same even though I made effort to ask him questions, he'd reply with one-word answers and I made it pretty clear I was done making effort in that short-lived friendship. It looked like Tommy, Alex and Jenny had picked up on Luke's behavior too, he was way quieter than usual. I saw Tommy roll his eyes at one point and I wondered if this was a regular occurrence when he and Emily were together.
I decided I was gonna keep out of that one.
Jason and I quickly went back to work, being with him the whole day made the shift go so quickly, and before I knew it, we were locking up.
"You know you've still got making up to do?" I bumped his hip this time.
"After dinner." He said in an assured voice.
In a repetition of the day before yesterday, Jason and I headed back to our rooms, got changed and headed down to the canteen. Tonight it was fajitas. After Jason and a few other members of our table laughing at me struggling to construct my one, Jason signaled for us to leave.
"Come with me." He grabbed my hand and led me through the resort. His hand never left mine until we arrived at our destination.
"No way! What film are we going to see?" I jumped in excitement, he'd taken me to the cinema.
"A star is born." He smiled at how excited I was.
I bought the drinks, he bought the popcorn. I was embarrassed to admit how much I cried throughout the ending of the film and did my best to hide it from Jason, unfortunately for me I was not the most subtle of characters.
He placed a hand on my cheek and turned my face towards his, wiping a tear that had fallen.
He leant down to my face, slowly. I shut my eyes in anticipation for what was about to happen. I leant forward, but he paused and whispered in my ear.
"Wussy."
