*Beep* *Beep* *Beep*
I groaned and rolled over, hitting the stop button on my alarm. I opened one eye and glanced at the screen, it was 8.30 am.
"Urgh!" I pulled myself out of bed, letting out a final yawn, and stretched.
I walked over to the bathroom and splashed some cold water on my face. I fetched some black jeans and plain black t-shirt from my wardrobe, the attire they had asked us to wear under the red Butlins windbreaker they would give us on shift. I proceeded to sit down on my bed, propping my small mirror against my pillow while doing my makeup and tying my hair into a low bun. By the time I had finished all this, I glanced at the time on my phone again and it was now 9 am.
Knock Knock KnockI slipped my chunky black trainers on as I went to go and answer my door. Standing before me, dressed similarly to me in all black was Luke.
"Oh, hi!" His presence took me by surprise, I was expecting Jason to be knocking.
He ran a hand through his hair, almost nervously.
"Hey, I was wondering if you wanted to go down to breakfast together...you know, since we're on go-karts together, I figured we may as well." His confidence that I had seen before seemed to have fallen out the window at this point. What was going on?
"Yeah, sure! Let me just grab my bag." I turned around, propping the door open and quickly grabbed my keys, phone, purse and put them in my mini backpack. I turned back around, and Luke was watching me.
"Let's go!" I smiled, walking past him and out the door. He followed.
The few steps we had taken since leaving my room were silent, Luke didn't attempt to make conversation.
"So, you usually on go-karts then?" I looked up at him from the corner of my eyes.
He ran a hand through his hair again "Yeah, 4 days out of 5. I'm usually on bumper cars the other day."
It went silent again. We had reached the stairs going down to the ground floor, where the canteen was.
"You like cars then?" Wow, Lottie. This was your attempt at making conversation?
"Kinda, I guess." Yep, us two will be married with kids in no time.
We reached the doors of the canteen and I let out a small sigh of relief when I saw Jason and Jenny already sat at the dining table we were on last night. I quickly poured some cereal and decided to make a much-needed coffee if I was going to survive the day with Luke's conversation continuing as it had. Luckily there was a seat free next to Jason, and I sat down happily.
"Morning, you." Jason put one arm around me in an attempted embrace, while spooning a mouthful of cereal at the same time.
"Morning!" I looked him dead in the eye and sent him a look, in an attempt to signal how awkward my day was going to be. He sent me a look back, I don't know how but it told me he understood.
I hoped Luke was just not a morning person and he would somehow become more interested in talking to me throughout the day. I took a big sip of coffee.
Breakfast continued with us all chatting, Tommy joined a few minutes later and was telling us about what the first day back with all the holiday goers was like. Busy was the answer to his long-winded story. I finally took the last sip of my coffee and looked up, Emily was meters from the table and about to sit down, once again there was no room.
