I slowly began loosing track of how many days we had spent under the merciless heat that with every passing hour, every passing day that speeded by in heaps of dust and sand became unbearable. Orange swam in my vision at every step, blinding sunlight a constant source of unavoidable heat as hot sweat drippled down my forehead in faint, sizzling drops while above, sun as if pointed directly at us. Every mile became harder and harder to push on; more often would my shoes get stuck in the sand which not only slowed me down, but my friends as well.
Water and food supplies came dangerously low, forced us to share them in even tiniest pieces just so we'd be able to partly satisfy the gnawing beast that schrached at our stomachs.
As the daylight finally began to disappear, seep into a lonely sight of dark blue sky and as the heat had stopped its effect on me, I lay in the middle of the cold desert ground, listening to low rumbling and stirring inside my stomach. For who knew how many times, I felt my hands involuntary move toward it just for barely contain the pain caused.
Troubled sleep, mumbling just a centimeter away from my head as Nico turned and tossed in his sleep have all, aside the discomfort that came from barely a gulp of water everyday, kept me awake. Storm clouds collected at the horizon, think as smoke covered the dark blue sky similar to a blanket that spread darkly. No wonder I couldn't close my eyes– the sight grew closer, with every minute my head rested on the hard ground becoming more ominous and shadowy. I blinked rapidly, forced myself into a sitting position which sent another wave of unbearable pain through my stomach, as if parting it in half the way my hunger advanced.
Focusing on the distance between, now blue desert and us, thickness of the clouds swallowed any sight of mountains we were heading at, brewing into an unstable cocoon of– storm clouds. Quickly, despite the pain I brought myself up, eyes scanning the distant field, it's surface only bigger as it advanced further toward us. I pushed Nico's shoulder, never stopping before another voice broke through the already risen wind.
"You see that? It's lights!" I turned around quickly, saw Thomas urgently shake Newt– boy stared after Thomas's outstretched hand into flickering of many small lights, playing on screen like darkness beneath all shadow of clouds. Their forms remained circular, even through the blowing sand and darker shapes of buildings near.
"We made it!" Minho stated happily, with almost a smile folding his lips upward. It hit me then, after all the suffering, heat and dehydration, we finally made it.
I felt happiness build inside of me, the sight of lights that even gave hope as fast as it came, did change to utter fear– near us a lightening bolt hit the ground and resonated heavily through the emptiness and to my ears as they began ringing faintly. Sizzling sounds emitted on that spot forced me to shake Nico's sleepy form once again, then grab hold of his jacket to start running. "Let's go! We gotta go!Come on!" Thomas yelled in shock, eyes widened as he took an urgent step after step toward the lights– of course I didn't know where exactly would they lead us, but no matter that I hoped, believed it was safety.
One more time the sizzling bolt of energy hit the ground thunderously, made me hurry even more toward the unknown, run along side Teresa and ignore the waves of distinct pain flowing through my leg. It didn't matter in that moment, escaping the hell Scorch provided did. Behind, echoing, thunder bolt after thunder bolt fell and arose dust just as same as the hurried run of our feet. I couldn't see anything aside the lights and figures of my friends in front of me, cold wind blowing through my hair as the black shapes of buildings slowly became distinguishable. Aside me, shouts drowned by thunder sounded barely as whispering.
"We're getting closer!" The only thing I did hear was Minho shouting, before another bolt stroke– his voice died down forcefully, broken through as he, in the force of lightening flew and hit the ground. I stopped running abruptly, changed my course away form the building as I saw two more figures helping carry the boy.
