Cheryl's POV
I was sitting outside Toni's room. Veronica had gone in to put a card by her bed and a small set of flowers, plus to say a few things to Toni. I waited for her to come back out of the room.
The door opened and Veronica walked out. She turned to face me.
"Go ahead." She mumbled. I sighed loudly, my breath heavy, before standing up and going in to Toni's room.
I took my seat, as usual. I looked at her, her body was practically lifeless. I put my hand by hers.
"Hey Toni. I'm here. Hope you haven't missed me too much, even though it has been less than a day since I last came." I didn't even know what I was saying at this point. I didn't even know what to say. The words were just flowing. I was too worried to stop them. I was ready to sing our song to her again with a slight hope that she might wake up, but she never has before. However, I wasn't going to give up.
"What a surprise, gazing in to your eyes. I swear that I still get lost in the light. No photograph could possibly show, they you I kn-" I stopped my singing. I swear, I saw Toni's eye lids open. For a split second. They opened. Then again.
"Oh my god..." I muttered under my breath. Was I dreaming? I pinched myself. No, still here. Was she really waking up? After two weeks? The weeks had been long without her.
She blinked again. Until, her eye finally stayed open. Her hand jolted slightly. I could feel myself grinning. I was crying tears of joy.
"Toni?"
"Hi." She answered.
"Oh my god! You're awake! I can't believe you're awake!" I hugged her tightly. I wanted this to last forever, so I'd never have to lose her again.
"Can you get off of me?" She said, almost sounding uncomforbale.
"Sorry. What's wrong?" I asked because she looked partially confused.
"Nothings wrong." Toni pouted and she sat up. I tried to help her a bit. "I can sit myself up, thanks." She replied, rather sassy.
"Oh...sorry." I didnt know how to talk to her. I wondered if she even realised or thought that she had missed out on two weeks of her life.
"Can you get me some pain killers? My leg is hurting and so is my head." She explained.
"Sure. Give me a second and I'll go talk to the doctor." She smiled at me. I put my hand to her cheek, pushing the hair out of her face.
"I don't think you should be touching me like that. Not very professional." She said. I was puzzled.
"What?"
"Well a nurse shouldn't be touching their patient like that, don't you think?" Toni said. Is she joking? Does she think I'm her nurse? I was starting to panic.
"Toni, I'm not you're nurse. I'm you're-" she cut me off.
"Of course you are. I don't recognise you so you must be my nurse." Toni stated.
"I'm-you think I'm your nurse?" Toni nodded. Please no, I thought. "Toni, I'm not your nurse. I'm your girlfriend." I stated, hoping she would remember us, how close we were and how close I still want to be.
"Do you always try and pick up patients? And like that? Sorry to say but, it ain't gonna work. Not on me." My heart started to ache. This was almost, but not quite, as bad as losing her completely. Did she not remember me? I tried to hold her hand again, see if it would trigger anything.
"Please, don't touch me." She said, anger growing in her voice by the second.
"Toni, please just-"
"Just stop. Look, I don't even know you." It was those words that broke me completely. She wasn't joking. I could tell. She genuinely couldn't remember me. My eyes started to burn and I ran out of the door. 'I don't even know you'. Her words were flooding my head...
