Chapter 12 - Friends

"Wow.. a lot of things have changes." I said when I entered the Gold Lifes building. I walked inside and all the employees greeted me. I'm here to have a meeting for the new company because I will be one of the people who take over along with others.

"Yes, sir. You should check the lounge." My secretary, Henry, said as he pressed the lift button.

"Will check that later." I said and we walked into the lift. Henry pressed the 19th floor and we went up.

"Who's the other people who will take this over?"

"Jace, Serena and Cameron, sir." My body tensed when I heard Serena's name. I gulped nervously and loosen my tie up. When we're arrived at the 19th floor, I walked out and Henry lead me to the meeting room. I asked him to leave and I walked into the room. I saw Serena already arrived and she's alone.

She turned to me and she seems to know that I will be here. She gestured me to sit and I sat down across her. I can't take my eyes off her and she's just not talking to me.

"How are you, Serena?" I asked.

"I'm good, you?" She asked back which is quite surprising.

"I'm okay.. I guess." I said and she nodded.

"Want to eat lunch together later on?" I asked in a really careful tone and she looked at the table blankly. I was waiting for her answer but she just kept silent.

"Serena?" I asked.

"5 years is not a short period of time, Caleb." She stated and I was quite shocked when she's trying to bring that topic up.

"I know, I'm sorry."

"What were you thinking?" She turned to me and I just don't know how to answer that.

"Let's talk about it later on at lunch." I said and she shook her head. She got up and she gestured me to get up from my seat. She walked out from the meeting room and I followed her.

"Cancel the meeting.. schedule it for tomorrow." She said to her secretary.

"Noted that, Ms. Cesantio." Her secretary answered and she gestured her to leave her alone. We walked into the lift and she pressed the rooftop button. When we arrived there, Serena walked out first and then I followed her. She stood up near the edge to see the beautiful view and I stood right beside her.

"Canada.. for 5 years.. you didn't even have the idea to comeback." She said still in that tone.

"Sorry."

"You didn't even think about your family and friends?" She bursted angrily.

"Sorry."

"You're a fucking idiot, Caleb." She turned to me and I kept looking straight to the view.

"Sorry."

"Did you leave because I told you to leave?" She asked and that's where I turned my body to her.

"Serena, you need space and besides it's better to be apart because we grow a lot. Look at you.." I smiled and she sighed.

"Easy for you to say thay but not for me." She said and I turned my body back towards the view.

"Being together will make us hate each other. It's like we're not meant for each other." I said because it's right. I don't know what will happen after this, I don't want to predict the future.

"Don't you like it when I left? Isn't that what you want?" I asked carefully.

"Even though I hate you a lot because how you treat me, you always have a special spot in my heart. You know that and I know that. It's not something that we both can deny." She stated and she's right. There's something about us that we can't describe. We both want each other but there's something missing that cause us to.. just drift apart.

"I don't want to hurt you anymore, Serena. That's why I give you 5 years to heal yourself and our relationship. I don't want you to hate me." I said.

"Well.. I guess you're hoping that I have a boyfriend or something. I should have get married with Darren. I mean.. I want to see how you react." She hissed coldly.

"If that's your decision.. I will respect it because when you're with me.. all I do was hurting your feelings so if marrying someone you love will make you happy then I will be happy too." I said sincerely even though I will go through a tough time accepting the fact.

"I made mistakes, I know that and I'm sorry, Serena. I don't want to bring up the past because it will hurt you again. I just want to apologize once again before we can move on with our lives because I don't want us to stuck in the past and have this hate relationship with each other." I added because that's what I got from all of this. I learnt a lot when I was in Canada and I realized that I was wrong.

I turned to Serena and she just stay silent. I turned my body to her and I sighed.

"5 years was long and I know. It was hard for me too because I missed you like crazy but I know if I go back, you still won't be okay but 5 years changed us into a better person and now.. I want to sincerely apologize to you that I'm sorry for hurting back then. I was stupid and still had no idea what a relationship is." I said with all of my heart and I looked down to the ground.

"I know you still can't forgi-"

"I forgave you already. I forgave you right on the day where I know that you left America." She said and she turned to me.

"Leaving us like that is much more hurting than you telling me to stop screwing each other." She added and her eyes filled with tears.

"I'm sorry, Serena. I had to do it.. for you." I said and my heart crunched.

"What now?" She asked as her tears fell out from her eyes. She wipped it quickly and I looked away.

"Friends? You know.. like we used to?" I asked and she looked at me blankly.

"Friends?" I asked as I put my hand in front of her.

"Yeah.. Friends." She said as she shook my hand.

Friends.. that's the last thing that I want my relationship with Serena to be but I don't want to hurt her. I really don't want to hurt her anymore. I've had enough hurting her. I will take a step backwards right now and I think it will be a great idea.
