So, by now, you've probably caught on that there has been a distinction between beings that can use magic - referred to a few times as magic by thought - and beings of magic - sometimes referred to as magic in blood. Here's some overview of what beings of magic actually means, the creatures in the series that fall under this category, and spirits as well, since they are closely linked to beings of magic. Enjoy everyone!
Beings of Magic
What it means - magic in blood vs magic by thought
From 'beings of magic' it seems pretty straightforward what it means, right? I agree, so I won't spend too much time explaining this. Beings that have magic are likely to fall into this category; however, they have to be almost born of magic - that seems the best way to describe this. Beings of magic have magic within them, naturally. Whether they can use their magic or not, they have it and it gives them some ability that ordinary beings would not have.
The best way to understand it is by looking at beings who have magic in blood and those who have magic by thought. Elves and humans are both creatures that have magic by thought, meaning they have to consciously direct it. Meanwhile, dragons and peagasi are creatures that have magic in blood, as their magic is not always controlled - evident in how both creatures are capable of flying even though the laws of gravity say such a thing is impossible.
List
The following creatures are beings of magic that appeared or are mentioned in the Rising Dragons series: dragons, pegasi, kitsunes, griffins, rocs, thunderbirds, hippogriffs, and hydras.
Spirits
A spirit is not a being of magic. However, beings of magic are the only kind of creature that can become a spirit. Spirits form when beings of magic have more spiritual energy than normal, and use their magic to warp their spiritual energy when they die. This ensures that their spirit remains attached to the land and that they survive their death. However, there are some other ways that creatures can become spirits - although such a thing is very rare.
Spirits are rarely altruistic and rather look out for themselves most of the time. Once, some time ago, spirits were a major part of civilisation and helped beings of the same species. However, as the need for spirits lessened over the years, spirits stopped helping.
It should also be noted that spirits do not have minds like beings that are alive, meaning certain things such as telepathy will not work on them. However, since spirits are dead and are - put simply - magic, they can understand any language and everyone, in turn, will understand their words.
List
Below are the spirits that appear in the Rising Dragons series:
Jibakurei - A spirit that protects a specific place. They occur when a being died and their will is strong enough to bypass death and remain to protect a location.
You hun ye gui - These are wandering ghosts of the dead. Once you go near the group, you can't leave and forget what you need when alive and dying as a result. This ends up causing one to become a spirit and join the group.
Anansi - A spirit known for gathering knowledge and stories. They appear as a spider and have been around for many, many years.
