You've seen magic appearing constantly throughout the trilogy, so here are some explanations and my own thoughts when writing it. Enjoy, I suppose. If you have any questions or pick up any plot holes, just comment and I'll try to figure out what went wrong.

Magic

The first thing to know is that magic is energy - it's a type of energy, spiritual energy. Spiritual energy enables a being to influence their own magic and also determines how much magic a being has. Whilst magic is energy, you can't simply use it. Magic can be influenced, but it takes practice and control. To control magic, and thus use it, most beings use a language to sharpen and focus their intent, which enables a being to influence the magic and use it.

Magic is often viewed as something that's always changing and flowing, almost as if it were alive. This notion comes from beings who are capable of feeling strong magic around them, this is often because such begins are in tune with their spiritual energy and are strong magic users.

Moreover, magic is not dark or light - it simply is. Neutral, I suppose, if one were to put a description on it. However, magic can feel dark or light depending on the intent of it. Magic cast with the intent to harm is considered dark magic and often feels negative due to the intent that fuelled it. In contrast, magic cast with the intent to help or protect is considered light magic and often feels positive as a result. There have been recorded instances of dark magic protecting and light magic being harmful, but such events are rare and few.

Spells

As mentioned earlier, magic is partially casted through a language helping to focus and concentrate a being's will. Throughout the series, there have been instances when a single word has been used to cast magic, and there have also been times when there's been multiple words or even chanting instead. Few words are useful for when your will is strong enough and you clearly know what you want, but often means the magic is chaotic and barely controlled. A sentence often helps make the magic more precise. In comparison, chanting is often used to clearly control something and ensure the magic remains precise. Often magic duels contain chanting rather than a few words as it makes sure the magic does what the caster wants it to do.

Verja - This means protect/defend and is said with the intent to shield. It causes an object to be shielded from everything else.

Láimh-allsekr de ljós - This means hand full of light and creates a small ball of light that fills the caster's hand or floats in front of them where the caster directs it.

Grunnr ris - This means ground him. When it was used in the book, it increases the gravity on a specified object ('him' in this case), thus grounding an object.

Fœra - This means smite/hurl. It causes an object to be thrown away whilst also burning the object, alike to an explosion.

Verða minn félagi skinn laufgrœnn - This means change my partner/comrade skin leaf-grinn. It changes the skin of the intended being to change colour to green.

Opnask austrvegr læsa - This means open the lock. It undoes locks.

 Writing Magic

So, I thought I'd do a bit of an explanation of what happened over the series whilst I wrote the magic. Magic is seen in numerous books as something that is directed by words and is an energy of some kind. I've very rarely seen it explained in further detail. Following the same idea, I created an energy that was directed by a language, and also didn't put much detail into it. However, my focus did go into the language itself. I'm not capable of creating my own language with grammatic syntax and all that. However, I am capable of finding some obscure languages and working with numerous websites to create sentences. In this series, I used Old Norse and Scottish Gaelic, with the latter filling in words that I couldn't find in Old Norse. Everything else, how things are said, how many words, etc. all came in as I wrote and I reckon they're fairly self-explanatory. Honestly, this book has very little magic planned before I wrote it and could probably deal with some more in-depth thoughts and studying. However, that - I suppose - is something for another day!
