The Future

The months following the fall of Mark and Alvah see many changes occur. Some changes are the results of Mark's own programs being warped and twisted to fit into society. One is the military force is separated into two sections – one that remains in-village and the other that patrols the rest of the landscape. The force is subject to the laws of the closest town and is run by a leadership group made up of all the town leaders across the mainland. Additionally, the panel of judges that was briefly created during Mark's time became a wildly accepted method of prosecuting those who have been proven guilty of crimes. The messenger system remains the same and becomes hugely successful.

Some changes are due to the elves losing their isolated status and coming to the mainland more often, along with the new increase in beings of magic who are no longer afraid to hide. Fáelán and his organisation work on humans interacting with elves and vice versa and becomes well-known for his efforts in the war and also in keeping society running smoothly. Although a few called for the elf's demise due to infiltrating the human society and the massive intelligence organisation he was running, far more beings owed their lives to Fáelán and his information, so nothing happened. Meanwhile, Aldrys worked with beings of magic and everyone else, helping them come to a peaceful life and working together to survive and create better lives for themselves. On the other hand, the dragons and dragon riders hunted down those who had been part of Alvah's force and took them prisoner if they could and killed them when they couldn't.

With the elves came runes, and a new understanding of them. A small force of elves and humans teamed up to understand the magic and powered the runes and how to use them. Two months after the defeat of Mark and Alvah, they created and used a rune that caused light. It was quickly realised how helpful such a rune would be in general, resulting in the rune being taught everywhere. Due to the newly created rune, more beings started learning about runes and using them. In the following years, runes would start to appear everywhere with numerous domestic uses.

In the following years, magic would start becoming a normal part of their world, with runes being the primary tool used to access magic. Elves would see magic as a skill rather than something to be coveted. Likewise, magic would become less important to the elves but rather helpful more than anything. Additionally, humans would start showing signs of magic like they once had, but different from the magic their ancestors had held. Working with elves and beings of magic would see humans become competent with magic.

As civilisations became less isolated and more a singular civilisation with numerous cultures, stories would arise over massive battles and dragons that once existed. Centuries after the dragons and their riders disappeared for distant shores, stories would become legends and dragons would become myths.

But that is in the far future, and we are talking about the near future. We're talking about the aftermath of a war that was not quiet but was largely silent. Remember, that human society has just gone through a war sixty or so years prior. Their society has changed so much in living memory that they only vaguely understood how to work in their own cultures and areas. Their reliance on dragon riders had resulted in a crime wave that was only beaten back when they attempted to do something about it themselves. Essentially, by the end of the war, humans had come to the realisation that they couldn't rely on others and, more importantly, couldn't let a single person dictate their lives. The desire to be able to do something is what spurred much of the changes in society.

As there tends to be in life, not all changes would be considered good, but that's not the point here. No, the point is that they have a future and it's a brighter one. It won't be the same as their past, but now there aren't any isolated species and powers that control everything else. Now there is magic and laughter, and even if there is sadness, they'll manage.

Their future is going to be a future, and they'll make it a bright one.
