The next morning I awoke to the sound of Colby snoring next to me. I looked over at the clock next to me which read 8:00. Lucas must have slept in. I got out of bed and walked to the kitchen to start breakfast. I only cooked a few eggs along with a pack of bacon and made three plates. Kat stayed with Sam last night so I wasn't worried about making anything for her.

Soon enough, Colby was coming out of my room and grabbing a plate.

"Hmm... I never knew you could cook this well," Colby said, with a mouthful of food.

"Colby don't talk with your mouth full, I can't understand you."

"You sound like a mom."

"I am a mom, dork."

Colby and I laughed and Lucas walked into the room, "what is so funny?"

"Nothing, sweety.  Here's your breakfast." I sat Lucas' breakfast on the table and lifted Lucas up onto the chair.

"Thank you."

"So do you have any plans for today?" Colby asked when I sat down again.

"Yeah, I have school."

"Oh, you're in college?"

"No, I still have to graduate high school. I missed almost three years of school when I was with my ex, so I'm in online schooling."

"How did you miss school? Did you guys run away or something?"

"You remember how I said my ex was dangerous?" Colby nodded and I sighed, "My ex is part of a gang, more specifically, the leader. The only reason we met was that he meant to kidnap my sister but mistook me for her. Needless to say, Stockholm syndrome set in after a year, I think, and one thing lead to another and I was pregnant by the time I was sixteen. My freshman and sophomore years were spent with him while my Junior year was spent with Lucas."

"Oh. So do you still have feelings toward him?"

"God no! Those faded a long time ago. I think the only reason I developed Stockholm syndrome was that I needed something to get me through being in captivity, something to make me look forward to tomorrow."

"And Lucas changed all of that?"

"Yeah, he did. There were a few times when rival gangs would use me to get something from him, and it's terrifying. I knew that if I'd stayed, Lucas would've been a target."

"How were you threatened? Or do I not want to know?"

"Usually I had a gun to my head, but there were a few occasions when they threatened to rape me. No one ever followed through, though. I was only ever injured once, and that was when the house got raided, luckily, I was only shot in the arm."

"Damn."

"Colby watch your language, Lucas is right there."

"Sorry. So, I was thinking..."

"Oh, crap."

"Hey! It's not that bad. I was thinking the three of us could go out to the park and have a picnic."

"The park?" Lucas' face lit up.

I laughed, "That would be great. What time?"

"Well, I have to go home and change. But as soon as I get back we can stop somewhere for food and head to the park."

"Sounds like a plan."

---

By the time Colby got back to my house, I'd dressed myself and Lucas and grabbed a blanket.

"Are you ready to go?" Colby asked.

I nodded and we left to get in his car, "Wait, I need to get Lucas' car seat." After putting Lucas' car seat in the car and strapping him in we left and drove to a nearby grocery store. Colby was the only one to go in, after making sure Lucas ate everything he wanted to buy.

After maybe ten minutes, Colby came back out of the store with a few bags of food. "Ok, anywhere else we need to go before we head to the park?" Colby asked, getting into the car.

"Nope, I think we have everything, " I said, looking around the car then smiling at Colby. Colby nodded in response and started the car.

"Next stop, the nearest park," Colby said, a childlike expression on his face.

"Colby, you're an idiot, " I laughed. Colby laughed as well.

We left the grocery store and drove to a nearby park where we set up our picnic. It wasn't a very large park, nothing but a small playground and a few tables to sit at. As soon as I let Lucas out of the car he ran towards the playground.

"He seems excited," Colby said with a laugh.

"It's because I've never brought him to this park. I usually only bring him to the park closest to our house," I replied.

Colby nodded and grabbed the bags of food, " Can you carry the blanket?"

"Yeah. It's a blanket, I think I can handle it," I said with a laugh.

It didn't take long for us to find a good spot. I sat the blanket down on the ground before Colby sat the bags of food down. At this moment, Lucas had just gotten to the bottom of the bottom of one of the slides.

"Mommy, can I get on the swings?" Lucas asked walking over to Colby and me.

"Sure, Sweety. Do you want me to push you?" I asked.

"No. I want Colby to push me. Can you swing next to me?"

"Of course. Colby, are you ok with that?"

"Yeah. Come on, Bud."

Colby turned around and started walking towards the swing set, Lucas following close behind. I followed them and sat on the swing next to the one Lucas chose.

In the fifteen minutes we spent on the swings, Colby and I attempted to teach Lucas how to swing on his own.

We failed. Miserably.

Lucas was so adamant on the idea of Colby pushing him on the swing that he hardly put any effort into learning.

"You may just have to bring him here when I'm not here," Colby said as we walked back to our spot to eat.

"Yeah," I laughed, " He's starting to favorite you over me."

"I don't think that's it. I'm pretty sure he's only preferring me because I'm new. He's just trying to get a feel for who I am."

"How do you know that much about kids without having one of your own?"

"I don't know. I guess I'm just able to put myself in a child's mind more because I'm not in a position where I have to be in charge of a child."

We spent another couple of hours at the park before Colby took Lucas and me home.  It was a great day, and I'm amazed that Colby took so much interest in Lucas. I guess he understands that we come as a package; if he wants to be with me he has to be okay with Lucas being in the picture.

A/N

It took so long to put this chapter together. Hopefully it won't take as long to get chapter 9 out. I think the next chapter will be pretty short, just a filler chapter, but it will have a bit of significance to the story, so please don't skip it.
