Chapter 3

827 20 5

I woke up around six in the morning. I always have to wake up early, since Lucas is an early riser. I, however, am not an early riser, so I need coffee and some time to wake up before going into parent mode.

Unfortunately for me, Lucas was up extra early today. Instead of waking up at 8 like he normally does, he woke up at 6:30. Lovely. I made him his normal breakfast, scrambled eggs, and walked outside since Kat's inside to watch Lucas. As much as I'd hate to admit it, the stress of raising a child has gotten to me. I started smoking after Lucas was born, which was not long after I'd left him. The stress of knowing he would possibly come back, and raising Lucas was a little much, for my sixteen-year-old mind to handle, and being as impulsive as I was, I tried a cigarette. It didn't take long before I was hooked, and quitting is easier said than done.

I'm not highly addicted, not at the moment at least. I've been cutting down the amount I smoke for the past few months. I'm hoping I can try going cold turkey before I turn 20, give myself a birthday present and, hopefully, save myself from the long-term side-effects.

I took one last puff on my cigarette and put it out, walking back inside. Kat was pulling Lucas out of his high chair, as he'd finished his breakfast.

"I'll take him into the living room Kat, go ahead and run off with Sam, "I said. I know she and Sam made plans and I wasn't going to let me and Lucas delay that.

"Thanks. Just call me if you need anything," Kat grabbed her purse and walked out the door.

Only a couple minutes after Kat left I heard a knock at the door.

"Kat, did you forget your keys again?" I asked as I opened the door. To my surprise, it wasn't Kat at the door, it was Colby.

"I don't think I'm Kat," he said with a laugh.

"Oh, haha. What do you need Colby?"

"I was just wondering if you wanted to hang out for a while."

"Of course, just remember Lucas, he gets a bit clingy."

"No problem, he's an adorable kid anyway."

I smiled and let Colby in the house. Lucas came running out of the living room and hugged Colby's legs. Colby's eyes widened and he looked at me. 'He likes you' I mouthed with a laugh. Colby smiled and rested his hand on Lucas' shoulder.

"Hi Colby," Lucas said, excitedly.

"Hey, Lucas. Great to see you again," Colby squatted down so that he was eye level with Lucas and gave him a proper hug.

After they ended their hug Lucas looked my way, "Mommy, I'm hungry."

"What do you want?" I asked.

"PB & J!" Lucas jumped and ran for the kitchen.

Colby and I laughed and followed Lucas into the kitchen. I made Lucas his sandwich and we all went into the living room to watch TV.

"So, tell me about your past," Colby said, looking at me as I turned on some kids show for Lucas.

"It's not something I particularly like talking about. Kat and my immediate family are the only people who know about it."

"You can trust me." I gave Colby a look. "I swear on my life I won't tell anyone."

I sighed, "Have you heard of Luna Blythe?"

"Yeah, she went missing like five years ago. The case was mysteriously closed two years after her disappearance. Everyone thinks she's dead."

"She's not dead."

"How would you know?"

"You're looking right at her."
