Chapter 5

Katrina's POV

I unlocked the door and walked inside, Sam following close behind. Walking into the living room, I laughed seeing Colby and Mira curled up on the couch sleeping. Colby had his arm around Mira's waist with his head resting on the back of the couch. Mira was cuddled up against Colby's side with her head lying on his shoulder. 

Sam walked in and laughed, "Looks like Colby finally found someone."

"Lucas must be sleeping. He would've woken them up had he woken up." I walked back to Lucas's room and, sure enough, he was sound asleep. 

Sam and I walked back into the living room and started watching TV while we waited for everyone else to wake up. 

Colby's POV

Waking up next to Mira was probably the most memorable experience I'd had in a long time. Minus the fact that Sam and Kat were interrogating me to no ends and I had to stop them from posting a photo of Mira and me sleeping to social media. 

"So do you guys have any plans?" Kat asked excitedly. 

"I'm going to take Mira out at some point. I just need to know when you can watch Lucas for us." I would honestly love to go out one day, maybe to a park, with Mira and Lucas, but a first date is a good place to start. 

Mira was still asleep, snoring softly while cuddled into my side. I assume she must've had a long night. Or Lucas had her up early. Either way, she seemed exhausted. And no matter how hard I tried I couldn't stop thinking about her past. Were her and her ex in love? Did she lose those feelings for him when she was pregnant with Lucas or did she leave purely for Lucas? I have so many questions for Mira but at the same time, I don't want to make her relive anything she wants to forget. 

She looked so peaceful and at ease when sleeping. It was easy to tell how stressed she was when she was awake, and I saw the pack of cigarettes setting near the door. I know exactly what I want to do for our date, I just need to know when Kat can watch Lucas. 

"I can watch Lucas on Friday, I don't have any plans that day, " Kat said. 

"Yeah, that would be great. I'll tell Mira when she wakes up."

Just that moment Lucas walked into the living room clutching a blanket. He climbed onto the couch Mira and I were on and sat next to Mira. I grabbed the remote and changed the channel to one with kids shows

Mira woke up about an hour after Lucas and was surprised to see that Sam and Kat were home and Lucas was awake. 

"Why didn't anyone wake me up?" She asked, sitting up and rubbing her eyes. 

"You looked tired. I thought you could use the extra rest," I answered, although I knew how she'd respond. 

"Still, you should've woken me up when Lucas woke up."

I could tell she was slightly irritated but I didn't care. She needed her rest and I let her have it. I've noticed that Mira likes to be very independent, despite the fact that she knows that she needs a break every once and a while. She doesn't have the energy to take care of Lucas on her own. She needs help and we all know it. 

"Oh, Mira, Kat said she would watch Lucas on Friday if you want to go out then."

"Yeah, sure, that works for me."

I sighed in relief and tightened my grip around her waist. For some reason I feel the need to protect Mira and Lucas; like if I let them alone for a long time something will happen to them. Mira did mention that her ex wasn't the best of people. If he were to come back looking for Mira and Lucas. I don't know what I'd do. 

"Guys, we're gonna go head out for lunch. We'll be back later, " Sam said as he and Kat got off the couch. 

"Ok. We'll see you guys later, " Mira said. Sam and Kat left the house and Mira got up to go get Lucas some food. 

When Mira came back into the living room, Lucas following close behind, she sat next to me. We sat in silence for a good fifteen minutes before Mira broke the silence. 

"What's up with you?" She asked, a slight hint of worry in her eyes. 

"What do you mean?"I asked, not understanding what she was referring to. Mira motioned to my arm and I looked down. Without realizing I'd had my arm wrapped around her waist extremely tight. "Oh, sorry, I didn't mean to do that."

Silence took over once again, but soon I noticed Mira staring at me. 

"What are you staring at me for?" I asked. 

"What are you thinking?"

"Why does it matter?"

"Well, obviously, there's something wrong. Your arm doesn't just tighten for no reason. Obviously, you were thinking about something that's bothering you."

"I guess I've just been thinking about your past and what would happen if your ex were to come back. Just the thought of that makes me angry and I subconsciously tightened my arm." It's true though. Just the thought of this coming back to haunt Mira scares me. I don't know why I'm so protective, but I am.

"I mean it's definitely a real fear. I just have to be cautious. I've just kind of learned that I need to live while I still can. I know my ex would never try to hurt me. My fear is that he'd harm anyone who helped me get away from him. Which reminds me, I should remind you that us even going on one date could put you at risk."

"And I'm willing to take that risk. Mira, I don't know what it is, but there's something about you that pulls me in. I feel the need to protect you and Lucas. I don't know why, but I do." I can't believe I just admitted that. I just admitted to having feelings for Mira.  I've only known her for a week and I've already developed feelings for her, and on top of that, I honestly think that if I were to spend more time with Lucas, I'd start to see him as my own son.

"That's sweet Colby. I'm glad you care about us. I just don't want anything to happen to you because you were associated with me. I know what my ex and his 'co-workers' care capable of. I know they wouldn't hesitate to harm you. Especially if he thought we were romantically involved."

At least I know she cares about me too.

Longest chapter yet. I'm so happy with this chapter, like, I might actually have talent when it comes to writing.
