Chapter 10: All Is Fair In Love And War
Third person POV
“I walk this lonely road, the only one that I have ever known.” Calum hummed as he walked down the hall way at school. Things were hellish between everybody, so for the first time in forever, Calum was dreading to be heading to detention. He pushed the door open and saw Luke in the corner of the room. Luke was sporting a black eye, and a busted lip.
All of that was courtesy of Calum, but Cal was a bit worse for wear himself. His right eye was swollen shut, and his lip was busted. Those were because of Luke, but the burning sensation on his left cheek was the fault of Ashton. How did everything get so messed up?
*Earlier that day*
Calum raced to the far corner of the school, Ashton at his tail. “Cal, please talk to me!” Ashton yelled. Calum ignored his cries, and kept sprinting. “Slow down!” Ashton yelled again. His voice floated to Calum’s ears, telling him that Ash was right on his heels. “Fuck, I can’t breathe, please!” Ashton’s voice was hoarse.
Cal slowed down to a stop, Ashton nearly collapsing onto him. “I feel like shit.” Calum whispered.
“At least you do sports!” Ashton whined. “I do Netflix, not this!” Calum chuckled through his troubled breathing. “Speaking of Netflix, I cannot wait for season 10 of Supernatural.”
“That one weird show with demons and shit?” Calum asked chuckling. Ashton put on a mock offended face.
“It’s not weird!” Ashton scoffed. “It’s an amazing show, showing how you never give up on family, how angels are dicks, and Satan is adorable.”
“Like I said, weird.” Calum giggled at Ashton's glare. “Why did you chase me, why didn’t you just let me go?” Calum asked, the air becoming tense around them.
“You can’t just run away from your problems.” Ashton spoke indignantly. “I’ve tried, and it never works. You need to face him one of these days.” Calum looked at the ground, not able to meet Ashton’s eyes. Ever since the day everybody divided themselves, Calum and Michael had been avoiding each other. It was hell, but Calum saw no other way.
“I know. But I just…” Calum trailed off. “I get scared you know? I lost the most important person in my life, and if I get him back, I would lose you.” Calum took a step closer to Ashton, less than a foot in-between them. “I can’t lose you.”
“Guys!” Luke yelled from down the hall way. He worked his inhumanly long legs quickly to catch up with his boyfriend, and his friend. “What happened?” he looked between the two questioningly.
“Nothing.” Calum spat out. Bad timing jerk. Luke frowned at Calum’s tone, but shrugged it off and returned his happy smile to Ashton. Ashton blushed with a flirty grin, and walked closer to his giant boyfriend.
“How are you today?” Luke asked, his voice lower than before. Ashton giggled, Calum gagged. The lovers were oblivious to Calum’s discomfort. Ashton stood on his tippy-toes and kissed his boyfriend sweetly.
“Get a room, ass-holes.” Calum muttered to himself.
“I can kiss my boyfriend whenever the hell I want.” Luke pulled away from Ashton and shot Calum a nasty glare.
“Fine, want me to pull up a chair for your little show?” Calum’s voice rose with agitation.
“No, what the fuck is wrong with you?” Ashton piped up. “Why can’t anybody get along for once? I'm so sick of this shit!” The other boys turned to look at the smallest one in the group. Ashton was shaking with sadness and fury. He scratched furiously at his wrist, blood starting to leak from the now broken skin.
“Ash, please stop.” Calum’s eyes widened, fear coating every thought in his mind. “Sit down, breathe, you need to calm down.” Calum helped Ashton into a sitting position against the wall and backed up.
“This is your fault.” Calum muttered as he walked by Luke. The next thing he knew, Luke’s fist made contact with his face. “Shit!” Calum hissed as he retreated. Another blow the face, and Calum’s fury erupted. He let loose a wild swing that caught Luke in the gut.
“Stop!” Ashton screamed. Calum couldn’t hear him though, as he gripped Luke’s hair and slammed the blonde boys face into his knee. Luke fell to the ground, his face nose dripping blood. Calum was about the beat the tall boy into oblivion, when he was knocked to the ground. Pain erupted through his whole face, blood flowed into his mouth.
“I told you to stop!” Ashton cried. He fell to the ground and held Luke while Calum watched. Now he felt more pain in his heart than anywhere else.
“You three boys!” a sharp voice screamed. They turned to the best of their ability to see Ms. Squaler standing there, fury etched in her frown lines. “Detention! All of you! Now!” she screamed.
“Luke needs to go to the nurse!” Ashton yelled, his arms wrapped protectively around his boyfriend. Ms. Squaler’s eyes narrowed, but she nodded.
“Fine, all of you go. But straight to my class afterwards!” she yelped, before turning the corner and walking into the room she came from. Out of that room popped out a head with hair now dyed bright red. Michael watched as Ashton left with Luke, leaving behind a tearing up Calum. Michael ran out of the room to his former boyfriend.
“C’mon Cal.” He soothed. “Let’s get you to the nurse.” Calum jerked away from Michaels touch, even though it comforted him down to his soul.
“I can go by myself.” He snapped. Michael frowned, but nodded.
“I’ll see you in detention.” Mikey kept his voice steady, and walked away. Calum walked the opposite direction.
*Present time*
Calum looked between the faces in the room, the one he hated, the one he loves but he left behind, and the one that now hates him. “We all need to talk.” Ashton spoke softly. “Everybody. Tonight we’ll all meet at Perrie’s.” Nobody disagreed. Nobody would dare to, especially after seeing Calum’s swollen and blackened cheek. Who knew the boy would have such a powerful swing?
