I was too shocked and panicked to scream. Then, one second I was falling over 40 feet to the ground, and the next, I was caught in protective, strong arms.
“God Clove! You scared me to death!” Cato sighed in partial panic, and partial relief.
I was shaking like a leaf. I couldn’t even open my mouth to speak.
“Hey, you’re okay now.” Cato murmured in my ear. For some reason, this made me burst into tears. I buried my head in his chest, shaking uncontrollably.
“Sh” He murmured, again trying to calm me down. He’s had to do that multiple times for the past few days. I must look so weak right now. If I hadn’t been so scared, I might not have let him do this, but right now, I was just glad that he was there for me.
Cato brought me over to the bench on the far side of the training center, and set me down carefully.
“Just sit here for a little while.”
I was about to object, but shut my mouth as he murmured a soft, “Please Clove.”
He turned and walked over to the spear throwing station, pulling the knives that I had thrown out of the targets, and picking up a long, silver spear. He moved to the fifty foot mark, and with almost a grace, threw the spear, where it landed straight through the center of the target board.
I hadn’t paid attention to him throwing a spear before, but I wasn’t at all surprised at how good he was at it.
I sat on that bench until the last of my fingers stopped shaking. When the other tributes arrived, I made sure to watch the District 1 girl carefully.
She stayed mainly at the archery station, and I hate to say it, but she wasn’t too bad. She never hit the bulls eye, but she never missed the target either.
The boy from her district wasn’t bad either. He was pretty skilled with a spear, hitting the bulls eye multiple times.
An alliance with him wouldn’t be too bad, and maybe having the girl would be even better, I could keep an even closer eye on her.
I pulled myself off of the bench, walking over to the boy from 1. I wasn’t shaky anymore, making me seem, hopefully, intimidating again.
“Hey.” I said, in a flat tone, which got his attention.
“Um, hi.” He says, turning to face me.
“You aren’t too bad. You know, if our two districts team up, we could probably wipe out the other tributes without a problem. I’m Clove by the way.” I said, holding out my hand for him to shake.
“Um, sure, I’ll go ask Glimmer.” He said, “Oh! And I’m Marvel.” He turned, and walked to the other side of the training center, and began to speak to the blond girl.
So her name’s Glimmer. I scoffed, what stupid names they give their children in 1.
He soon returned, Glimmer by his side.
“Okay,” Glimmer said, I don’t know if it’s just me, but her voice was super annoying.
I couldn’t wait to step into that arena and drive a knife straight through her chest.
