WRONG! I WAS WRONG!
"Darasimi Alade; Social Prefect," was what I heard before jumping back in to the reality of life. Everyone was so loud, cheering and clapping.
My heart was pumping so fast I could hear it in my ears as I stepped onto the podium.
Temi Adewale, the former Social Prefect pinned the badge to my blazer.
"See I told you you were going to get it! Congratulations b!" She said embracing me in for a hug.
"Thank you so much." I hugged back before proceeding towards the Principal.
The role call continued and Kamal was appointed as the Health Prefect. I was happy for him.
After the announcement of the new prefects, the Principal asked both us and the former prefects to wait behind for a group photo while other students marched back into their classes.
After the picture taking, Noah approached me so fast like a lion about to pounce on its prey.
"WE DID IT!!!" he yelled as he hugged me so tight.
"I knowww, I'm so happy for us ehn." I hugged back.
Shortly after our warm embrace, Ogeh approached us too.
"Hi." She smiled softly
"Hey," Noah and I responded in unison.
She sighed before continuing, "I just wanted to apologize about what happened last week. I said what I said out of anger. I was really stressed from studying so much. I'm really sorry. Can you forgive me?"
Her eyes had now become glossy and my heart ached seeing her like that. I needed more of an explanation as to why she would even react that way and not even talk to us about it but I pushed that ego aside.
This is my best friend, Noah and I's best friend. We should know her better than anyone else. She's not one to express how she's feeling at ease. I understood.
We should have reached out to her instead of being distant for so long.
I hugged her and she hugged back, quietly sniffling on my shoulder. Noah also joined us.
"Shh, stop crying. We should have understood that you were getting stressed from the exams. We're sorry too," Noah cooed.
I rubbed my hands up and down her back. "It's okay, Ogeh. Next time just talk to us okay, let's know how you're feeling. We're your friends and we won't judge you. If anything we'll help."
We let go of each other as Ogeh looked up at us smiling. The little tears that fell from her eyes had dried up on her cheeks but her eyes were bloodshot red. It was evident she had been crying for a while, before now and I wonder why.
Noah reached into the pocket of his blazer and brought out his handkerchief wiping Ogeh's face. She smiled at him, before taking the handkerchief and continuing to wipe her face herself.
"Thank you guys. I promise to tell you everything, like everything from now on". She giggled.
"That's better," Noah smiled, "Why don't you tell us what's really happening?"
Looks like Noah noticed it too. There was a much bigger issue here.
Ogeh looked at the ground and sighed. She looked back up to meet her eyes and said, "I promise I will. When I'm ready. But today's your special moment, both of you! Let's enjoy, it okay?"
Noah and I looked at each other. His eyes read, should we let her be for now? I nodded slowly and looked back at Ogeh.
"No problem sis," I smiled.
"We're always here if you need anything," Noah assured her.
"I know, thank you." She held both our hands and squeezed them lightly.
Finally! It was good to have our best friend back. Now, I felt very complete.
We laughed everything off as we walked back to our various classes smiling. It was good to be together again!
As I stepped into the class, Kamal approached me. "Congratulations," He said with his hand up for a high five.
"Thanks, congratulations to you too." I said before hitting his hand back for the high five.
He's so nice.. woah.
