*Dedicated to makeandoffer for being flipping amazing and writing AMAZING stories. My sister and I were talking about one of her books today and I just couldn't help myself.
Chapter Eighteen
My mind surged as I took in the words my brother had just spoken to me. My father was finally going to show up. It was his house and he could come and go as he pleased, but I certainly did not want to see him. I thought through several attempts to avoid him.
“Don’t even bother, Sis. You won’t get very far with that.” Laura had walked into the kitchen with a slight smirk on her face. “I just talked to Dad and he has dinners and a few family activities planned out.” She put a sarcastic tone on the word “family” solely for my benefit. She had no problem with our father, but she didn’t particularly like any form of gathering. She preferred to be alone or in very small groups.
“Is he bringing his new mistress or does he have the grace to leave her on the street corner he found her on?” My tone was undeniably bitter.
Miguel rolled his eyes. “Don’t beat up the poor girl because of Dad’s mistakes. It’s not even his fault that he is like that. We all know that Mom and Dad’s bond is weak because it is unequal. He was born a vampire and Mom was changed.” He took a step forward, making his next statement very clear. “If I’m not mistaken, you were headed down that path not too long ago.”
His words instantly hit my pride and I responded in the emotion. “That’s none of your business?”
“I thought it was my business. Seeing as that is the very reason we are here.” He was so calm that it frustrated me even more.
Before I could respond, Laura and Elizabeth stepped between us. Laura gave me a pointed look which made me take a step back and hang my head. Elizabeth put her hands on his chest.
“I’m hungry, Miguel.” She reverted to whispering, but we all heard her with our intense hearing. “You wore me out last night.”
Laura snickered, but quickly covered it with a cough. Miguel’s eyes glazed over in remembrance as a smile broke out over his face. I could only shake my head. He moved over toward the door and pulled a string situated next to the light switch. A bell tolled softly and the two chefs appeared before us.
They both had fire and ice elemental powers which made their cooking abilities beyond superb. We ordered a decent sized brunch. We all sat at the bar table, sipping happily at our juices and coffees.
I was sitting beside my sister without any anger or resentment from the previous day. In our relationship, we hardly ever apologized. We would be sorry, sure, but we showed it rather than having long discussions about our feelings. It was just easier that way.
A fancy plate was set before me. It was filled with a southern style omelet, potatoes, and French toast sticks. Everyone else had the same meal. It was delicious to say the least.
Laura and I spent the rest of the day in my room watching movies. We decided on some action and thriller films to keep us entertained.
“She’s not that bad, you know?” Laura said while I was switching the movie at one point in the afternoon.
“Who?”
“Natalie Obelyn.”
“Who is that?” I was wondering where this conversation might be going.
She sighed heavily. “Dad’s girlfriend.”
“Why are we talking about her?” I added a question before she could respond. “And how do you even know her name?”
